hi

i helping a friend with his network for a business he has all of his computers on a wired connection with all computers connected to "Network 2". he just added a new computer to use as a server for a program. but that computer is saying that he is connected to a different network name.  the  program on the other computers can't access the files on the new  computer because of that name difference.

when you ping the new computer from the others it responds back tho.

i was wondering if anyone knows of a fix for the network name change

The name of the network does not make a difference, and the methodology Windows uses to pick those names can be quite odd.

The real more likely issue is if there is a separate router on the network that was added in order to resolve a wireless coverage issue or is being used as a switch, that may be performing DHCP and NAT still. Please find out and report back the following information: (IP addresses that start with "10.", "172.16" through "172.24", or "192.168" are Private IP addresses, and it is safe to post full IPs for these ranges on the internet. Please don't truncate or shorten any of the IP addresses I ask for below unless they start with something other than these numbers. For MAC addresses, it is safe to share them online as they are only useful on the local network)

  • IP address of one of the older computers:
  • IP address of another of the older computers:
  • The "Default Gateway" IP address of the older computers (should be the same for both, if not report both):
  • The MAC address associated with the Default Gateway IP address, found using the command "arp -a" (should be the same for both, if not report both):
  • IP address of the new computer:
  • The "Default Gateway" IP address of the new computer:
  • The MAC address associated with the Default Gateway IP address for the new computer:
  • A complete list of what networking hardware (brand, model) is in use in the network

OP, make sure that if there is DC (Domain Controller) in the network, that the IP of the DC is entered as well in the IPv4 section.

If he has some type of router, tell him to change the settings.
