Cpu On the Cheap

I am looking for a used CPU in the $30 area. Are old i5's or i7's still running fine? I need to also buy the mobo for cheap too. I will just be running light games like cs go with an old 750ti I have. Either amd or intel are options and the cpu has to be 4 threads.

consider picking up an old dell optiplex from dellrefurbished.com

just make sure its a mini tower

Used sandy bridge or newer i3s and i5s are pretty good.

you might even be able to get an ivy bridge i5 or haswell i3. (i got an i3 4160 for $35 about a year ago.)

How much are the boards for those? I live far away from the mainland (in Hawaii) so I can't get big things shipped if they cost too much.

Used Xeons on eBay are very affordable and offer performance that rivals newer high-end desktop platforms.

No.

for 2nd and 3rd gen CPUs you need an LGA 1155 motherboard.

for 4th gen CPUs, you need LGA 1150

for 6th and 7th, you need LGA 1151

Could you link the board you got? I know it might not have the rebates but I can't find any reasonably priced lga 1155 boards on Newegg that aren't for pre builts.

I got an 1150 board, since I bought a 4th gen CPU.

LGA 1155 is old enough that it's not in production. try buy used.

All i can find are optiplex and lenovo thinkcentre boards for like $15.

if they're standard size, or if you're down for some modding, they would work. (depends on the chipset, maybe only for 2nd gen CPUs, sometimes for 2nd and 3rd.)

To use this board I would have to make a cardboard case which I have always wanted to do.

That looks nearly ATX.

if you can fit 3 or more screws into it to hold it in place it should be good.

The case I have is m-atx but I think even with none of the screws line up I could use long bolts and some plastic washers to secure it.
