With 6 core i7's coming to the mainstream, I'm starting to consider an upgrade. My current system is definitely still pretty capable but I should be coming in to a bit of money soon, and am wanting a nice new 3440x1440 monitor anyway so I'm just thinking about a whole new system.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel - Core i7-7700K 4.2GHz Quad-Core OEM/Tray Processor  (£338.99 @ Overclockers.co.uk)
CPU Cooler: NZXT - Kraken X61 106.1 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler  (Purchased For £0.00)
Motherboard: Asus - MAXIMUS IX HERO ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  (£227.30 @ Ebuyer)
Memory: G.Skill - Trident Z RGB 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 Memory  (£164.59 @ Alza)
Storage: Samsung - 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  (Purchased For £0.00)
Storage: Samsung - 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  (£137.99 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Seagate - Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  (Purchased For £0.00)
Storage: Seagate - Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  (£54.60 @ Aria PC)
Video Card: Asus - GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11GB STRIX GAMING Video Card  (£729.98 @ Ebuyer)
Case: NZXT - H440 (Black/Red) ATX Mid Tower Case  (Purchased For £0.00)
Power Supply: EVGA - SuperNOVA G2 850W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply  (Purchased For £0.00)
Total: £1653.45

I'd be swapping the 7700k for an 8700k, and the mobo for an equivalent Z370 chipset board, of course. I've left my Kraken X61 in there because I can re-use it, but I'd really like to switch to a nice air cooler, if the 8700k is efficient enough that I'll be able to overclock it nicely with a nice air cooler, otherwise I'll stick with my X61. Not too sure which air cooler I'd get if I do switch, nothing Noctua, probably something from Be Quiet!. I also left my EVGA 850W G2 in there because there's absolutely zero reason for me to change it. I'll be adding another 2TB HDD alongside my current one, and another SSD alongside the 250GB 850 EVO I already have. Lastly, I left my H440 in there because I've no idea what to change it for. I definitely want a new case, I'm bored of my H440. I don't dig the black/red colour scheme as much anymore. New case NEEDS to have tempered glass, and a PSU shroud. Other than that, it doesn't really matter too much, as long as it looks good to me lol. I was thinking about the Meshify C, but I was hoping to get something a little higher end. Then, I was considering Enthoo Luxe but that's maybe a bit too pricey lol.

there isn't really any need to upgrade from a 4790k to a 7700k. Id save that money and just grab the 8700k when it releases. Ofc go ahead and upgrade the rest but you would be wasting money going to the 7700k when you know you wanna get the 8700k

For the case are you for rgb sorta stuff or just a normalish case?

S340 elite and p400s come to mind. As well as the define mini c tempered glass, though it might be a bit small. Then again you are considering the meshify c.

Other than that I'm not sure what you're asking about? If you're asking about the CPU cooler the dark rock pro 3 is a good option.

I think the 7700k is there as a substitute until the 8700k is coming (like a placeholder in the PCPP list)

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

7700k is a placeholder for 8700k, and Maximus IX Hero is a placeholder for Maximus X Hero or whatever Z370 Strix/Maximus board fits my needs.

Not really that bothered. Although, with the P400S or Enthoo Luxe, I can have RGB and have it all synced up with the RAM and Asus parts.

S340 is a definite no no, it's a downgrade from my H440. An all black H440 with a tempered glass window would probably be my perfect case. P400S I was considering, but again, feels like a bit of a downgrade from my H440. Size isn't much of an issue, though I would like custom loop support since I have experience with custom loops, it's always a potential upgrade for me in the future if I have the money before my components start to feel lower end.

Basically just looking for opinions. Whether or not it's a worthy upgrade or if I just shouldn't bother at all. Or if there are any alternative choices somewhere. Dark Rock Pro 3 is a consideration, but it is a bit big. I'd be hoping to get a smaller air cooler, as long as it's enough to squeeze every last MHz out of the 8700k lol. I think I'll wait to see how 8700k thermals are before deciding though since if they're not great, I'll just hold on to my X61.

Hm yeah I see what you're saying.

There's the Corsair 460x, though I'm not sure if that's the sort of thing you're interested in. Woulda said an R5 but no TG or PSU shroud.

Honestly yeah I agree, a black h440 sounds like a good fit for you. If you wanted to, you could always consider spray painting your h440's red parts or something.

Yeah waiting is probably a good idea. The dark rock 3 also is out there (a bit smaller than dark rock pro 3 and only one fan)

I'm not so sure about the 460x. I'm not really a fan of the tempered glass everywhere, just wanted TG side window but the 460x WOULD be an upgrade from my H440 so I guess it's a contender, with the Enthoo Luxe, and maybe Meshify C and P400S. I really don't know though lol, case is really a toughy for me this time round. Define R6 with TG window and PSU shroud would be kick ass.

Yeah, I was also thinking that. Well, I was thinking of doing a TG mod on my H440, painting the red parts maybe silver or dark grey or something, and then maybe seeing if I can mod the "NZXT." light on the PSU shroud so it's RGB or something. However, a new nice case with a TG window and neutral colours would be a good bit easier lol.

Yeah, I'm kind of hoping the Dark Rock(Non Pro) 3 is enough to sufficiently cool an 8700k because it's a beautiful cooler IMO, and not too gargantuan like the Pro 3 lol.

Yeah I understand. If the luxe is something you like, it's not a bad case really. It's not my type since I don't like the design of the front (I'm quite picky about the front of cases :P), but that's just me.

Totally agree on the R6. Take an R5, put TG and a psu shroud on there and you've got one hella case.
