The most recent development is shingling of bits. Rather than having one bit on a track (though they are still one on a track), they are now overlapped slightly. Number of platters and read heads will increase as well. Some of the 6TB and 8TB disks that I've owned came with three, four, or even 5 disks oddly enough (I believe it was a Constellation 3TB).

What exactly changes about them when the capacity rises? They all seem to only have 2 disks each...
