this might be long one, sorry

built mini ITX pc back in feb, Parts list here : https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/b/jFdXsY

ran perfectly till June when I started having some issues with CPU being pinned at 100% during game play causing lock ups and hard system crashes, managed to fix that by pushing from stock to a 5ghz overclock, 5.1 worked until I closed a game then instant crash? so pulled back a little, that worked most of my games ran fine, got hot in my room but it worked, now last I'm back to crashing within 60 seconds of gaming.

While this was going on, I have been talking to intel as it didn't seem right given my friend is running the exact same cpu and a different 1070 (windforce not ftw) with much better performance that I am getting, intel asked me to do a burn in test using their utility, failed every time, it was set back to stock speeds for all these tests as I wanted to know if there was something wrong, and didn't want my overclock to change that result.

Intel now want me to send my chip back, so will be taking it apart tomorrow after work to box up ready for them coming. and they are sending me a new one.

What I want to check, does anyone think that something else in my system caused this issue? I have had a budget psu kill and gpu on my first build, ever since then they don't go in my builds, other than using an old psu to power the pump, this one has never had anything other than the corsair psu powering it, possibly issue with the motherboard socket? nothing has ever leaked so not an issue there. Just I don't want to stick another CPU in just to damage it again, either sticking with this one or upgrading to the 7700k in the future, depending on performance.

Check the pins on the MOBO to make sure they are in good condition. Make sure you have a healthy about of good thermal paste (I would recommend repasting anyway). If those are both fine then there might be software on your system pushing the CPU. Run task manager and make sure nothing there is using up all your resources.

well that for one

5ghz overclock

and that for two

when a cpu is hitting 100% usage during simple videogames , you figure out why and solve the problem

the thing you don't do is fry the cpu with a 5ghz overclock and try to overcome the obvious software based issue. I'm surprised intel is even sending you a new one

game crashes can be caused by almost anything. but if you have a doubt on your cpu i would suggest stress testing it and reading of the temps on all your parts. for example if everything is superhot the motherboard automaticly shuts them down to prevent damage. if this is the case you have to rework your cooling setup (maby just move some fans) or get some new or more fans. but it seems like you already have upgraded fans.... strange :/ i still maby be the temps since you have such a compact case. so i suggest stresstesting your pcs different part memory gpu cpu etc

please have a read see if this helps answer any questions https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/796104-gta-suddenly-causing-100-cpu/

task manager is showing games as 90-95% which the system is lagging to hell as there is nothing left for windows to run, temps see to rarely over 80 on the cpu and i don't think I have seen 55 on the GPU, all in a custom loop.

Like I said, intel tech had me on the phone for over an hour running tests to see if it was a fault or not, they believe something isn't right, honestly I was gonna stick with it until I october and then get a 7700k and just enjoy the hyperthreading, but they offered me a new one so Ill take that for now

I'm struggling to see how this is a software based issue? This is now running at 40fps at 1080p on an overclocked 1070

I will check pins once the cpu is out, currently under a mono block...

have you tried a different windows installation or is that too simple vs replacing the cpu

Ok, I didn't mean my message to sound funny or rude, if it came across that way then im sorry, no I haven't in the case of anything other than windows 10, as its a kaby lake chip, win 10 only, as for rolling back through the updates, didn't change much

so new cpu is installed, my issue is fixed, only downside is I need to redo my overclock profile and see if this one can go as high as the last one, what do we think the chances of a second chip being able to handle 5ghz? and yes, the issue with the first chip was there before I ever overclocked it, so no, I'm not worried about it happening again.

Thanks again for the help :)
