i need help on upgrading/getting a new build together. right now i have an fx 8320 on a msi 970 mobo. Started with a 380 but upgraded to a 480 before the 580 was released. Pc has 16gb DDR3 all running from a evga 550w 80+ gold power supply. My question is I'm trying to build a new pc but money is tight so what should i start with that i can lets say use while i'm still saving up for other parts.

well an investment in something such as a high quality monitor, keyboard, and mouse are always good. But in terms parts that you could say carry over to future pc builds i would say would be a solid high quality psu, and ssd.

Honestly, your build isn't that bad right now. I'd say your next parts that you should upgrade are your CPU, motherboard and potentially RAM.

That's what i was thinking but getting a better gpu now would mean i could use it while i work on getting the new mobo, cpu and ram

Sure, but the RX 480 is still a solid card.

If you want to go through a little time and effort, you might be able to sell that card off to some miners for a "good" price and upgrade to a used GTX 980Ti or an appropriately priced GTX 1070.

The 480 is a solid GPU, in fact you can probably sell it for a lot more than what you paid because of miners. As for upgrade, this is what I would get;
