Hi all!

 

Specs:

AMD Ryzen 7 1700

ASUS PRIME B350-PLUS

Chieftec 450W PSU

Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3

 

I recently upgraded my PC to Ryzen and I started overclocking. Everything went fine and now I'am stable at @3.8Ghz with 1,3V VCore, but when I try to push it any further I can't get it stable @3.9Ghz at any voltage not even 1,5V VCore which is way too high.

Am I just unlucky with my chip or is this board's VRM that bad or maybe my PSU sucks? Does someone have any idea why?

Ryzen beyond 3.8 will usually be more hungry on the volts and you need to make sure the RAM is playing nice as well.

Also setting VDDCR SOC volts higher will help what is more advanced but did not write my follow up article yet.

I actually have my SOC voltage @1V which is a negative offset from the stock 1.1V default with my memory speed of 2933Mhz.

I just built a similar system (spec below) with same mobo and it took me a little while to figure it out.

I now have 3.8ghz stable at 1.325v (on stock wraith cooler) and it passes realbench, cinebench, and passmark with decent temps.

I could get it to run on 3.8 at lower voltages but it would not pass the heaviest multitasking stability tests. 

 

I found the three Ryxzen 1700 OC articles below the most helpful.

 

The key was to set the Digi+ VRM settings to extreme and set switching frequency to 350.

If you start with resetting the Mobo defaults via F5 you will find the CPU voltage is stock 1.1875 and you need a voltage offset of 0.1375 to set it at 1.325V

 

Your PSU at 450w may not be enough or not stable enough either. I went overkill at 750w but I don't know what I'll do downstream so went a little bit higher than what I'd calculated. If you're overclocking quality of PSU is pretty central anyway.

 

AMD state not to go above 1.425V anyway as the max safe voltage.

 

I'm not really interested in pushing it beyond 3.8 because I'd have to change the cooler, and the performance gain is not that much relative wise for the tradeoff of power/heat/lifetime over 3.8 imo.

 

If I wanted to upgrade the Air cooler I'd try the Thermaltake's Contac Silent 12 CPU , which is getting solid reviews for such a low priced unit.

 

The full process combining the video (see below) suggestions and Offset guide I used was:

 

Process

  • Hit F5 to reset to default base state
  • Select AI Overclock tuner
  • Select correct DOHCP profile for RAM (I have 
    • Do asynch overclocking by testing RAM and CPU OC independently
  • CPU
    • Set CPU Core ratio (eg 38 for 3.8 ghz)
    • Set Core performance Boost disabled
    • Set CPU Core voltage
      • Use offset mode to enable variable voltage
      • Set to +
      • Set offset
        • Offset Calculations

          • 1.3v  = 1.3 - 1.1875 = 0.1125 offset 

          • 1.325v  = 1.325 - 1.1875 = 0.1375 offset

          • 1.35v = 1.35 - 1.1875 = 0.1625 offset
  • External Digi + Power Control
    • Load line calibration
      • Set all to extreme + freq 350
  • AMD CPS/Zen Common Options
    • Global C-State Control
      • Set enabled
  • Boot
    • Boot/Fast Boot
    • CSM/Launch CSM = disabled (NoteL You might have legacy hardware issues as I had so I left this enabled)
  • Save Profile
  • Testing
    • CPUz
    • AIDA64
    • ROG Rail Bench
    • Cinebench
    • Passmark

UPDATE: (Some of my findings, someone might find them useful)

In the end I was able to reach 4Ghz stable in OCCT Linpack, but only at 1.475V with Extreme load line calibration, so I want down to 3.9Ghz with 1.4V VCore and High LLC and it's still stable, but heat output is much lower. So if you don't have a golden chip pushing to 4Ghz on air with a comfortable temp (70C max for me) is not feasible.
