Thunderbolt Support

I guess this is the right place to post this. Since It's about my motherboard.

 

So, I'm currently rocking an Asus Sabertooth z97 MK1. Well, I want to use thunderbolt devices. I heard about the Thunderbolt EX II and tried to find it, but today it's out of stock everywhere (even ebay!). So my next question is, can the Thunderbolt EX 3 work on a z97 board? I'm not planning to run my display through it, only to have a TB3 hub/Nas/etc connected to my computer.

 

Also, what exactly is the TB_Header on the board used for? If it's just a cross-talk with the GPU for a display output, I shouldn't have an issue just running it without that connected right?
