If it's a decent budget, I'd say Ryzen 3, since it's a solid quad-core, and gives you a clean upgrade to a Ryzen 5 or 7.

If you want to stay with DDR3, look for an Intel H81 motherboard and a Haswell i5 or a Xeon E3-1231V3. None of the FX series processors are worth "upgrading" to, and all will be outperformed by the i5 in games.

 

If you're ready to step up to DDR4, the Ryzen 3 1200 and Ryzen 5 1400 would both make sense when strapped to a B350 motherboard. You're better off buying Ryzen CPUs new right now, though. The price cut for going used doesn't really justify the risk of finding out that the reason someone's selling their brand new CPU on eBay is that they fried it trying to OC.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.
