I want to tinker around with some intel stuff. I can get this board supermicro x8dtu-f with a xeon e5620 2.4ghz cpu anf 8 gbs ram for 30 bucks. Is this a good board/cpu combo? I want to server media and files to the home. I want to basically control my whole home network traffic through this device to control information that my children have access.

Any tips, tricks, or advice would be appreciated.

As far as a deal you aren't really going to get better than that. But keep in mind that board is for Supermicros Rackmount chassis - so you may find it difficult to mount if you want to put it in a ATX/EATX case.

It would be plenty of power though and the E5620 has QPI so you can always add a second E5620 and more ram later if your needs grow. The E5620s are only a few dollars off eBay.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah that's why I was looking into this solution. It looks like a very cheap way to start a server. I do have to come up with a case solution.
