Microsoft word 80% cpu usage

Go to solution Solved by scho228901,

@Ningols1598 it appears the issue is driven due to the view we're using within Word. If you switch out of Print Layout the CPU usage for Word goes to almost nothing. I can't stand using anything but Print Layout...but it does resolve the usage issue we're seeing.

Hello everyone

I recently noticed that my fans started to ramp up when using word, and even when I was doing nothing on it, so I went in the task manager and saw that word was using 80% cpu usage on my i5 6600k OC at 4.4GHz !

Even weirder, the more pixels word is using, the more cpu it will use

Here's different window placement with their cpu usage

Just opened mine with a shorter document and it was using 0.1% of my CPU while open. Have you tried another document?

Do you have hardware acceleration enabled for it?

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

I tried with a new file and made 13 pages, it was at max 10% usage, so normal I guess

When i try another similar file, it only uses about 40 cpu

It stays at 40% with both files open in fullscreen, but goes up to 80% again when i close the 2nd file

I'm not sure, but I never enabled it myself though

By default it should be on unless you disable it:

(btw that's a really stupid interface.  Things should always be worded as a positive, so you would check to enable, not uncheck to not disable xD but I digress)

It was enabled, I unchecked it and it's still the same, even after closing and reopening the file

If you open a document with just a few pages and try scrolling, is it smooth or does it break up quite a bit and lag?  If it does, I think this is the problem... in the past when I've played with this "feature", it has often not reenabled even when restarting word and tbh I'm not sure what causes it to finally flip, but I think you'll want to leave the acceleration on (unchecked).

It lags a lots when scrolling

Even holding left-click on the window and moving it is extremely laggy

And there is as much lag with hardware acceleration enabled or disabled

Oh, does this happen with everything?  Sounds like you might not have video drivers installed xD

That's really strange... well it definitely seems like a hardware acceleration issue, but I can't think what would affect the entire office suite but nothing else >_<

Maybe Microsoft's bugs free and totally not spying on anyone operating system? xDxD

@Ningols1598 it appears the issue is driven due to the view we're using within Word. If you switch out of Print Layout the CPU usage for Word goes to almost nothing. I can't stand using anything but Print Layout...but it does resolve the usage issue we're seeing.

Oh, didn’t think of that, I’ll try that then

Yep, it was the print layout. At least I don't need to edit files for now, so the read mode will do
