AMD 1950X build

oporto92

Hey, I pre-ordered the 1950X but haven't bought anything else yet. I will be building a new machine for work purposes, mainly photo and high quality video editing (4k, 60fps, 10 it,  ~400mbs files). Heavy multi-tasking and occasional gaming.

I already have a screen and will be using my old gtx 780 in the mean time as I want to see in action what vega has to offer and also have to feeling nvidia will release something in a fairly Waitable time.

My question is about RAM and motherboard. The faster the better, but what is the sweet spot? 3000mhz? And more importantly, 32gb or 64gb?

And as for the motherboard I'm considering the Asus zenith but I'm not sure if it's worth the price, I won't be getting multi GPUs but I am interested in all those slots and the Lan NIC which seems to be like the best I can get atm.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

3000Mhz is good, but ideally anything over that is just better.

3600 would be the "best" (I mean, technically infinite would, but you're unlikely to get past 3600)

I'd recommend getting RAM that's single-rank using Samsung B-die, and then clocking it as high as it can go. that may be 3Ghz, maybe 3.4Ghz. nobody knows.

the capacity depends on your workload. if it will use 32GB or close to 32GB, then get 64 to be extra roomy (if you have the budget). if it only takes up 20GB, then you can stick with 32 just fine.

Maybe get a 4x8 GB kit to start, so you then have room to upgrade if you need more RAM in the future.

-------

as for motherboards, nobody knows yet, since there are no reviews out. the zenith extreme looks really good, and the NIC it comes with is a nice 10Gbps one, but in terms of pure functionality, any nice X399 board will be good enough. just don't get any MSI boards, since they're bad with AM4, and nobody knows if they will put in the effort to be good again with TR4.

Thanks a lot for that. I will probably get some corsair or g.skill 3.2 or 3.4ghz but I'm not sure which ones would use Samsung B-die and I'm not sure what single rank is either. Could you please give me a little.

My current pc has 12GB, and I once had 18gb and it wasn't enough for a 1080p workload on premiere.

I wish there were more options for the motherboards, I like the gigabyte one but it has killer e2500 lan which I don't want and has a focus on high quality audio which I don't need as I have an Asus essence STX II...  Thanks for pointing that out about MSI.  No other brand is available atm here in Australia,  I think the zenith will be the one to get, price is not a concern since it's for work but I'm not rich and the more I can save the better. Can't wait any longer than release week date for acquiring the parts, got clients waiting on some 4K footage already : /

Thanks for your help mate : )

I almost missed your reply.

any RAM over 3.2Ghz is B-die, since nothing else can actually reach that speed with any degree of consistency. if you get G.skill Trident Z 3400Mhz, it will play very nicely with your Ryzen build.

I'd start with a 4x8 kit of RAM. (32GB) and if it's not enough, it's easy to upgrade to 64 later.

have you thought of what cooler you'll be using?

That should be more than enough. just make sure it's compatible.

seems like a great build.

Here is the build.

Seagate ST6000DM004 6TB BarraCuda PRO 3.5" SATA3 Desktop Hard Drive

$396.99

Samsung 960 Pro 1TB M.2 NVMe SSD MZ-V6P1T0BW

$828.99

In Win 909 Full Tower Tinted Tempered Glass Window Case - Black (still undecided, but need to fill the cart for now)

$399.00

ASUS ROG Zenith Extreme X399 TR4 E-ATX Motherboard

$879.00

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X 16-Core Socket TR4 3.4GHz Unlocked CPU Processor

$1,440.00

Thermaltake Water 3.0 Riing RGB 360 Liquid CPU Cooler

$249.00

Corsair Gaming K95 RGB Platinum Mechanical Gaming Keyboard - Cherry MX Speed

$329.00

Roccat Kone Pure Laser Gaming Mouse

$79.95

Total:

$4,601.93

Doesnt include video card (will get later), monitor (already have) and RAM, undecided, but probably one of these 3:

G.Skill Trident Z RGB 32GB (4x 8GB) DDR4 3466Mhz Memory

$573.98

https://www.mwave.com.au/product/gskill-trident-z-rgb-32gb-4x-8gb-ddr4-3466mhz-memory-ab94983

G.Skill Trident Z RGB 32GB (4x 8GB) DDR4 3200Mhz Memory

$516.98

$869.00

https://www.mwave.com.au/product/corsair-dominator-platinum-64gb-4x-16gb-ddr4-3466mhz-memory-ab81254

Total WITH RAM:

$5,118.91 to $5,749.89   Depending on which one I get and if I get two of the most expensive ones. I would ideally love to get the 64GB dominator, fast and cheaper than getting 2 kits of 32gb.

Lastly, and not too important, im also considering changing the storage options in order to get the Corsair Neutron Series NX500 400GB

https://www.mwave.com.au/product/corsair-neutron-series-nx500-400gb-add-in-card-nvme-pcie-ssd-cssdn400gbnx500-ac06045

$495.98

Any thoughts on RAM, storage or the build in general?

Forgot to add the PSU, I plan on getting:

Corsair HX-1200i ATX 1200W

https://www.mwave.com.au/product/corsair-hx1200i-atx-1200w-80-plus-platinum-modular-power-supply-ab59195

$379.00

Thanks !

Bump and question. Any ideas how my gtx 780 will hold up with the current build. Will buy 32GB RAM 3466MHZ and later on I'll get another 32gbs if necessary. This way I save a bit of money so I can buy other stuff like fans and fan controller...

Back to the video card, how would it hold up in CSGO and Adobe premiere?

I play in 1440p and edit in 4K

Thanks
