Hey guys,

Getting a Christmas gift for my partner, looking at getting her a beginner's DSLR (loves taking selfies).

My current options are:

Canon EOS 1100D w/ 18-55mm lens @ $450 AUD

   or

Nikon D3200 w/ 18-55mm lens @$525 AUD

I'm torn. DSLRs aren't really my forte, so I have many a question to ask regarding lenses and such, but first and foremost I need to know which is better value both now and in the long run?

Or am I looking at the wrong cameras altogether?

Go for Canon, I am in a photography class right now and so far the Canons have not let me down while the Nikon ones seem to turn out weird every once and awhile.

How so?

Between those two, I would definitely go for the Nikon, its far superior than the 1100d.

A Canon T3/4i would be a more comparable option and they have swivel screens for the selfies

In what way is the Nikon better?

Would the Canon's be more comparable in price or features?

The Nikon is newer, better processor and sensor, more features, better video. The 1100d is showing its age a bit now.

The T3/4/5i are more comparable in features and shouldn't be priced too far off either.

You have a way with words, sir.

Thanks mate, will take a look into them. So you'd prefer the T3/etc. over the D3200?

Yeah I probably would. The D3200 is a great camera too, definitely worth checking out, but from what you have mentioned I think the Canon T3/4i would be the way to go.

The selfies thing was sarcasm, seems like all the b*tches getting DSLRs need them for mirror pics... So a swivel screen isn't all that imperative

I'll have a look into the Canons.. Thanks again!

Yeah I guessed, but goes without saying shes a girl so the temptation will be there

If video is important the Canon definitely takes the win. Apart from that that its pretty much a coin toss in my view, you won't go too far wrong with either, they both have their ups and downs. Both are capable of taking great pics.

Another factor you should consider when deciding is the lens lineup. Try and forecast which lenses you might use in the future, to me that's the most important decision when it comes to choosing a brand.

Too right!

Video isn't really a big deal at the moment, more so the photos.

Lenses are a great big question-mark. Like I said, DSLRs are not my forte, so if you can point me in the right direction for a beginners run-down on lenses that would be maaad!

 Well if video isn't that important and the novelty of a swivel screen isn't a deciding factor I suppose you are pretty much level. Try and get into a local shop to check them out, as I said you won't go too far off track either way. If she really gets into it expect a lot more money to be spent in the future.

As for a run down on lenses, I wouldn't know where to start there's a lot to take in. Had a quick Google there for guides, didn't really find anything too comprehensive. Any ideas on what sort of photography she might be into?

Whatever happens in the future is up to her, not me

Might scrounge through the depths of the Internet for a guide, otherwise a shop is the next best bet, yeah.

Not sure entirely, probably landscape shots and artsy-fartsy stuff. Whatever keeps her preoccupied and stops her from nagging me while I game  :D

What about a Panasonic Lumix DMC-G5 Black + 14-42mm.

It is a mirror less camera with a viewfinder

Fullhd 1080p video in 25/50fps 30/60fps depends on your region

16mp and micro 43 lenses. (With converters you can use allmost all old lences)

It shoots raw and jpeg on the same time

Good burstrate (for the advanced selfie shooter)

touchscreen lcd

LEVEL GAUGE Yes (Built-in 3 shaft accelerometer sensor) (I like this on my GH3 you can see if your camera is stable)

It is pretty cheap with more or the same features then the 1100D and D3200.

In my Opinion the 1100D looks very basic and the D3200 pretty ok
