URGENT - Computer Won't Post

Hey all,

CPU: 5820k
Mobo: MSI X99a SLI Plus

 

Last week my CPU cooler crashed and stopped working, got into bios and all cores were at 105'c. 

 

I get a new cooler in the mail and hook it up (it's pumping).

 

I turn the computer on but I'm getting "DisplayPort no signal". 

 

I tried plugging it in through HDMI, nothing. I tried on 2 different monitors and my TV - nothing. 

 

I let it run and plugged my keyboard in and only 4/12 usb ports keep it lit. The other 8 turn it on and off instantly. 

 

I plugged in a motherboard speaker that I bought off amazon, but it's not beeping. 

 

Any suggestions? Did my mobo go? Is it my CPU?

When you said "I get a new cooler in the mail and hook it up (it's pumping)" is it a liquid cooler? How did the pump (I'm assuming) fail? Did water leak out? Did water manage to make its way onto your components?

Honestly, no clue how it failed. I wasn't monitoring my core temps because my mom stole my second monitor like a week before. 

 

Essentially, I trouble shot the hell out of it and thought it was a RAM issue.

 

Next, I felt the pump and it wasn't pumping. Finally got her to boot into BIOS and my cores were all at 105'c.

can you boot into the bios again? if you can ant the temps are still near that, put it in the freezer for about 20 mins slap it back in and the temps should stay around -5C or 0C and you should have enough time to fix it in the bios. that is if the Cpu is the problem.

Temps will stay in the lows for about 5 mins or less.

Can't get it into anything, that's the issue. 

 

On my monitor(s) it says, "DisplayPort No Signal".

 

I took it to my TV (Which has an HDMI port), and it says essentially the same thing.

 

I can't get the computer to put any image up at all, on anything

pull out your GPU and try it in another system, if it gives a video there then the problems will be slimmer.

If the Gpu works in another System then try every possible way of putting your ram, take all the sticks you got out. and use one. put the one stick you got in every ram slot on the mother board and try posting it.

if still not, try to get your hands on another pair of ddr4 ram and try that, if still none. then it's left to 2 things, CPU or MoBo

im in the middle of a move which makes this all hair pulling. 

All of my friends are about an hour away now so trying my gpu in a diff system is going to take at least a few days unfortunately.

 

thats why I wanted to see if anyone else has had an issue like this before.

 

i really do appreciate everyone's help but it seems that testing my GPU in a diff system is the only way.

 

Assuming it works in a diff computer, I'm going out on a limb here and saying it's the mobo.

So I decided to boot with one stick at a time, and it worked. 

 

However, when I put all 4 sticks in (in quad channel format) it won't post anything to the monitor. 

 

Any idea what this might mean? (Is that part of the board done for?)

Sounds like the memory doesn't like running at its speed with 4 dimms... What memory do you have?

Funny thing is... Since I've had this computer (for aesthetics) I just ran all four sticks in DIMM1,2,3,4 ... Not in quad channel.

What happens when you run them in dual channel?

Edit: I'm a little.... slow.

 

I assumed that quad channel was DIMM 1-3-5-7... It's not. I thought I remembered from the guide what's what it was, but my memory failed me... literally. 

 

It's DIMM 1-3-6-8. It's booted in quad channel, and is back up and running!!

Hey, then at least it looks like your cpu is fine (though im not sure about the IMC...). Have you ever gotten it to work in quad channel? When you run them in quad channel what slots are you putting the dimms in? What freqency is the ram running at in the bios?

This means that either the one of the ram sticks is bad or you have a broken ram slot.

Edit: I'm a little.... slow.

 

I assumed that quad channel was DIMM 1-3-5-7... It's not. I thought I remembered from the guide what's what it was, but my memory failed me... literally. 

 

It's DIMM 1-3-6-8. It's booted in quad channel, and is back up and running!!

New issue ... (Same thing - essentially)

 

I went to re-install Win10 on my C drive from a USB stick, and half way through the install it went through its reboot cycle. 

 

It kept telling me it was booting from the wrong place, so I changed the location and removed the USB stick.

 

Now (again) it won't come up on my monitor, can't get into BIOS, etc. 

 

I pulled the CMOS battery, checked all cords, etc.

I removed all ram and am cycling out sticks.

 

Still nothing.... Any ideas?

Sounds like the motherboard is dying somehow. You might want to open a ticket with msi.

That is bizarre. Were you ever able to try the gpu in another computer?

That is not possible that the Monitor causes the reboot cycle. just impossible. it might have been something else but not the monitor.
