html Change dropdown active on external header file

I am using bootstrap on my website and I also have an external header.html file, I am trying to add a class "active" to the nav bar when a user navigates to different pages, referencing this post on Stack Overflow https://stackoverflow.com/questions/45293038/jquery-bootstrap-dropdown-active
