I have recently aquired a segate skyhawk drive for free, I was wondering what the diference is between this and a regular hard drive (like a baracuda). Are there any downsides to using them for regular use?

probably more failures and possibly less performance. That's about it

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

150MB on my 5tb external drive. Blame USB 3.

SkyHawk drives are engineered with surveillance usage in mind. They are rated for 24x7 use and 180TB of data per year, while a standard desktop drive like BarraCuda is only rated for 8 hours a day x 5 days a week and 55TB of data per year. So for one, they're just robust to handle more rigorous environments. Because the firmware is engineered with high-detail video recording in mind, these drives prioritize writing large blocks of detailed video data, and are most ideal in environments which look something like recording video 90% of the time and reading (playback) the other 10%. They're very good at what they do, but not ideal for balanced read/write use applications. If you want a drive with some of the same robust features like the 24x7 use and 180TB workload rating, but more balanced read/write use cases, you may want to look into the IronWolf line rated for NAS use.

If you'd like further information on choosing the right drive for the right application, here is a video to check out.
