I was thinking of buying an Alienware M11X with a Core 2 Duo and the 335M in it for very cheap and using it as a portable little Lubuntu machine.  I've always loved Alienware's old design and I hate having to reboot to switch OS's on my current laptop.

About the laptop in question-

  • 4GB of RAM
  • 1GB GT 335M GPU
  • Core 2 Duo @ 1.3Ghz
  • Windows 7 Pro

Would this work well with Lubuntu?

long as you keep your expectations in check, i suggest getting a cheap Chromebook or thinkpad.

I know I know, mainly it's that I've always wanted one because they look so damn cool.  Plus its pretty portable.

Is there a way to load Chromebooks with a different OS?

yes, you could put Ubuntu or other flavour of linux or get Android( remix OS usually)

I'll consider it.  I like Alienware's keyboard style (I imagine it's very close on the M11x) and their build quality.  Got any suggestions for old Thinkpads or Chromebooks in the 11"-13" screen size category?

x220 for thinkpad, not an expert on Chromebook, look at build quality, price and reviews.

Looked at X220's on eBay and most of the used ones don't look too appetizing.  Any other smaller Thinkpads that might work for me?

i guess taste is subjective, look around, in my opinion, Thinkpad's have the best design, also the keyboard feels really nice.

you can even run OSX on it with some modding

They look sleek and professional, don't get me wrong, but I'm not looking to spend too much on one.  I'm looking to spend between $50-100 on one and the ones in that price range are beat up and are missing stuff.

I'm not as educated on Thinkpads as you..any other smaller Thinkpads worth a look?
