Home server, xeon

Go to solution Solved by Nikolithebear,

I would recommend buying a used server on ebay, like a Dell R710 or 410 :)  Theyre abit loud but theyre cheap, and have expansion options.  Also theyre great to learn on!

Hi,

I am looking to build my own server to use it as a nas, bittorent server and then learn virtualization and start to learn new stuff.

I am looking for a socket 771 or 1366 due to the passmark of 771 and 1366 xeon for the price.

Like every one, I have trouble with motherboard...

On most of the motherboard I don't see Sata plug, are they only with the rack ?

Can we put hard drive with a capacity of 2to in this kind of motherboard ?

Do you know cheap motherboard with at least 4 sata ?

I don't care about the speed.

Thank you

For example, on this motherboard :

http://m.ebay.com/itm/HP-445183-001-457882-001-Proliant-DL160-G5-LGA771-Sockets-Server-System-Board-/162434052904?epid=1200240172&hash=item25d1d2f328%3Ag%3AuB0AAOSwWxNYyxWK&_trkparms=pageci%3A87584628-67ff-11e7-a563-74dbd1809f34%7Cparentrq%3A3d5ff1b415d0ab6b05518f40ffea3db0%7Ciid%3A1

I saw 4 sata, but when I look at the specification for the dl160 g5, I saw only 2 sata....

Can I do a Raid 1 with 4x2To drive on this motherboard ?

Raid 1 is between two drives, one main and one backup roughly speaking. :)

"45 ACP because shooting twice is silly!"

Sorry, I am really new to this, I wanted to say 2 hard drive 2 back up if it's possible

Looks really interesting the poweredge 410 !

Thank you !

Just to be sure, the 4 hard drive 3.5 with hot swap and the 4 3.5 wired are in fact the same ? We can't have 8 3.5 drive ?

And my previous question, does it have a maximu capacity ? (I saw 2To on another discussion but I haven't seen proof

If you have old parts laying around and want another option. Not exactly server grade.

Depending on how adventures you want to go, you can do Xeon 771 into a 775 socket. Little sketchy because you have to use a sticker type thing to swap two pins on the 771 around. Been a while since but if I remember right you have to patch the bios for Xeon Ids and a little razor blade work to the socket locating tabs. The advantage is cheap Xeon 771 CPU on a commercial 775 motherboard. Only down side is DDR2 ram availability and capacity and no vt-d (if you need it). If you had a 775 board laying around its pretty appealing for home use.

I did it 2 years ago.  $50 used ebay motherboard and a $40 Xeon E5450 (equivalent q9650)

Anyways just an idea

6 SATA slots: http://www.ebay.com/itm/SuperMicro-X8DTI-LN4F-Dual-LGA1366-Sockets-DDR3-RAM-Extended-ATX-Motherboard-/201983203246

Personally I have an Asus Z8NA-D6C in my NAS which takes a PIKE card, but I believe these are quite expensive second hand now.

Socket 771 chips are really inefficient for Virtualization these days. You'd be better off with an AMD FX8350E if you wanted something for cheapish with higher core count.

depends on your budget. Many cases will take standard motherboards. A lot of used servers have proprietary needs that makes life difficult and you dont need xeons either.

For example for the lga1366 the xeons are actually cheaper than the consumer variants especially the ones with unlocked multiplier but those are useless because i grabbed a 6 core xeon before and overclocked it to 4.2Ghz using only the bus.

torrent server can be run even on routers too so requirements are just your storage space. Virtualisation depends on what you intend to do, for that you need to figure out how much ram and CPU you need. If you are just beginning i suggest getting at least 16GB of ram if you are running linux and not windows 10/server.

Some server motherboards are universal and will fit where consumer boards do and tell you what pins do you connect your power buttons to, take your typical CPU heatsink fan socket and so on.
