So I'm planing on upgrading my GPU, and I can't decide whether to go AMD or Nvidia. Now don't think I want to start a fan war, I just have a very specific situation that I think could help others as well. So here are my needs for a GPU:

  • I need GPU acceleration for Premiere Pro, I'm not sure if CUDA is better than Open Cl or not
  • I have an 1080p monitor, so I need enough performance for that. I also have two 1280x1024 monitors next to my 1080p one for skype and such, but I wont be multi-monitor gaming.
  • My budget around $300, $315 max
  • I'm planning on recording game-play, so is shawdowplay actually worth it?
  • I'm not sure if I want to get a shield, but the concept interests me. Anyone have any experiences with it?
  • Is mantle going to be worth it? Is there any way to even tell at this point?
  • Does anyone have any experience with GPU drivers on Linux? Are any of them easier to install than the other?
  • I'm not too worried about length or power requirements, but I don't want it to be too loud

So as you can see, I've got a lot to think about other than which one performs better. Any help would be great, both sides are very compelling!

Either the GTX 770 or R9 280X, depending on what games you want to play.

Nvidia Drivers under Linux are hell of a pain.. recently installed some for my old 7300GS.... took me 3 and a half hours to get them running flawless...still not running Minecraft with more then 30 fps, with a i5 3570K :D

You might have used legacy drivers, I'm not sure what the cutoff is for legacy and normal drivers for nvidia.

That's weird, since Minecraft is a fairly CPU intensive game. My video card will basically do nothing playing it, and my Sempron just takes it and does all of the work.

Nope.. used the ones form Nvidias Website... Problem is, that most Linux distributions come with preinstalledm shitty drivers, which then cause the Nvidia isntaller not to work. They have to be turned off, the runlevel has to be changed to 3 so they wont load up again, you then have to install and configure the nvidia drivers in textmode, until you get em to work.

Turn Advanced OpenGL on and see the Difference :) also install GLSL Shaders (or how tis spelled) and Optifine Ultra... fairly gpu using

OpenCL is better tan CUDA for Premiere Pro.

If you're recording a lot of gameplay and you need the smooth recording now, Shadowplay will be useful. Otherwise, AMD is coming out with their own version soon.

If you get the Shield, you'll have to go Nvidia. Try out the Ghetto shield to see if you like it or not. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luyDKZxf28I

I don't get what you mean by whether or not mantle is worth it or not. You're not really choosing something over it. It's just another feature.

Not sure about Linux drivers.

I'm thinking a 7950/7970/280x would fit your needs quite well.

Dr3nz4r, I'll be using Archlinux, so default drivers won't be a problem ;P

I don't see a need to, even though it's nice to know that. My little Sempron nails down a solid 60, unless a LOT of things like explosions are happening, but I plan on eventually getting an Athlon II X3 455 or an FX-6300.

i saw it already since this topic turned out interesting for me :D

Well as i See you got a graphical interface (KDE) preinstalled which leads to included generic Graphics drivers
