I want to Build a very low budget pc as a secondary pc for my friends (for LAN Partys at my Place).

Linus did a guide a while back with a server mainboard and 2 older Xeon CPUs.

Is it still relevant? Or even reasonable?

Would appreciate some recommendations.

no those 771 xeons are pretty much reaching their end of life. I would try to seach up on craiglist for a i7 920 pc since sometimes people let go of those systems for cheap.

depends on the games you want to play. how low is very low? My secondary PC for invited ppl is a Q6600 8GB of RAM with a GTX 650 on a 60$ screen that's just under 1080p and for most things it's perfectly fine.

parts costed about 70$ system plus 80$ GPU plus the screen 2 years ago.

Primary System

  • CPU
    Ryzen R6 5700X
  • Motherboard
    MSI B350M mortar arctic
  • RAM
    32GB Corsair RGB 3600MT/s CAS18
  • GPU
    Zotac RTX 3070 OC
  • Case
    kind of a mess
  • Storage
    WD black NVMe SSD 500GB & 1TB samsung Sata ssd & x 1TB WD blue & x 3TB Seagate
  • PSU
    corsair RM750X white
  • Display(s)
    1440p 21:9 100Hz

This is about as cheap as you can get while still keeping semi-decent performance. If you really want to stay at that ~$300 budget though, you might have to buy used.

Pretty much everything, we play a broad variety games, Rocket League should run not that badly on it.

But no AAA titles

well technically you could run some 4 year old AAA stuff at medium on it. with a couple other stuff manually turned down. the problem actually being that newer AAA titles have lower presets that litterally don't improve performance at all.... on any hardware, they just look uglier.

$300 should be more than enough for a 2nd-gen i5 prebuilt and an RX 560/gtx 1050/ti. I'd start on eBay, find a decently priced prebuilt, make any necessary upgrades and get the best GPU with the money left over.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W
