Long Range Wireless Data Transmission

Go to solution Solved by AshleyAshes,

There won't be an easy way to do this.  Firstly, for 90 miles, that's too far away without towers.  Since the earth has this nasty problem if being round the curvature of the earth gets in the way at long distance.  To reach 140+km (90mi) you would need a tower that is about 1.25km tall.  That would be a bit less than 2.5 CN towers...  You may want to get a building permit from the municipality first.

Since you'd have to construct the tallest tower ever built by man... That might not be the  most practical plan

Alternatively you could look at radio transmission options that involve bouncing your signal off of earth's ionosphere but this is no trivial task either... Though it would be easier than accomplishing the greatest engineering feat in the history of your species.  But this involves buying the proper equipment and actually learning how radio works.

Bonus Info: While usually seen as a tourist attraction, the CN tower is actually covered with communications antennas, it broadcasts television, radio, it's a microwave communications link for telecommunications and re-broadcasts radio signals for multiple municipal services such as police, fire, or transit.

Is there a way to transfer data from very long distances (~90 miles) in an urban area? What is the maximum size of data that could be sent over such a distance?

To elaborate

Let's say I had my raspberry pi 90 miles away from me, and I wanted it to transmit data but not recieve (such as data containing its location with an onboard GPS) to my location.

Is it even possible to send data wirelessly from an urban area to somewhere 90 miles away in another urban area?

OFF TOPIC: I suggest every poll from now on to have "**CK EA" option instead of "Other"

How much data are we talking about here

Like, a kilobyte

or maybe if possible a really, really low quality microphone audio

But OP is asking if the raspberry pi which is at a urban area able to send the data. It needs a "internet connection" to do so.

I'm not good in this, but do you think you are able to have mobile / cell network in that urban area you referring? If yes, then is there some way to "attach" a mobile / cell network to your raspberry pi so it can send data?

Like I said, I'm really not good in this so can't really give you a workable solution. Maybe just some random ideas I have in mind. Sorry.

You need something like this or this Or just use your phone and make a mobile hotspot

He dosen't really have any other option that's free.

As mentioned above you need a tower or you could do it from a hill or from a balloon.

Having a look at how other people do it is a start

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long-range_Wi-Fi

People are getting around 300km.

I remember it was quite a craze around 07 in NZ where people were trying to beat the world record

Oh yeah... A balloon... That shoulda occured to me.  And yeah, terrain can work for you (or against) I was assuming flat terrain.

But the short of it is, there isn't 'one neat trick' to get you that far, it's going to take some money and time and skill.

i would prefer to use a balloon than piss around with aligning an antenna precisly. All you need is:

a battery,

a wireless AP,

2 old satellite dishes - these are easy to find just dont wake the home owner

a fishing rod

A balloon & gas

well shit.

I don't know how radio works, there is no need to mock me :(

Does there exist some sort of prepaid data GSM chip with like 6 gigabytes of data on it that I could use to communicate with myself?

basically a prepaid home hotspot (and no, a wifi pod wont work)

of course there is. every telco should have a prepaid data plan. if they dont they suck.

you could use SSTV over HAM radio, you could send... say one or more QR codes using an SSTV program, and recieve those codes on the other end, at that point it's just a matter of restoring the data in the QR codes.

The problem with this though is that the image quality may not always be the best, you're other option while still using HAM radio is to mod, say a WRT54G Linksys, router to function over HAM radio. you could run the entire thing on a battery and while the speeds aren't phenomenal they're something. Also, some of these ham Radio internet programs actually give you free access to the internet and some even allow you to set up your own private network.

Of course, to do either requires having a HAM radio operator's license.

EDIT:

The benefit of using HAM radio is that you can power some of these radios off of a battery and the range can be upwards of hundreds if not thousands of miles. Plus it's Two way communication so the means of sending data back and forth is there.

the downside though is that HAM radios can be expensive.

My procrastination is the bane of my existence.

I make games and stuff in my spare time.

I just read this:

https://ham.stackexchange.com/questions/574/what-bands-and-modes-will-give-me-voice-at-3-000-miles

Is this stack overflow question incorrect then? 4,000 miles with a ham radio? and you are telling me that 90 miles is impossible?

You know that thing I said about bouncing signals off the ionosphere?   Guess how such radio signals can travel that far. :)
