Are you asking about overclocking or if you can run games on that system?

First of all, you can't overclock an i5 6400.

And yes, games will run fine in 1080p. If anything, your GPU would be the thing to upgrade first, for better performance in games.

But you'll be able to play all modern titles, with maybe a few settings turned down, in 1080p without any issues.

Does you mum know you're here?

The system that you have is more than enough for gaming and you could even upgrade your GPU to a 1060, possibly the 1070 and stick with the same CPU. The ram in your system is more than enough and for gaming, you should be good for the next few years. If you ever feel unhappy with your processor speed in other tasks then consider overclocking the processor by adjusting the base clock frequency. To make this simple the system that you have currently is well balanced and you should not worry about your processor being a "bottlenec"k.

If op is willing to flash to an older bios and eliminate temp reading in windows software, then overclocking potential of the i5 6400 equal to the k sku .(still relevant today on skylake)

If you have a Z170 board then this guide is worth a look http://overclocking.guide/gigabyte-z170-non-k-overclocking-guide/(GIGABYTE FOR OTHERS MANUFACTURER SEARCH IT)

Here a tutorial from Science Studio SEP 2016  (same process for i5 6400)
