Change video format

I was using Windows Movie Maker for years, when I wanted to change video format and do some basic editing. 

But now Microsoft decided, to remove that feature and I can't find any way to get this great program back on my PC.

 

So I'm looking for new program, that can change video format, but also keeps the quality of the original video. 

I would prefer if software is for free, and not that hard to use. You can also recommend me software that I would need to pay for it, as long as it's good.

 

When it comes to hardware, there isn't any problem, but with video editing and things like that, I just lack knowledge.

I use handbrake, recommended by other people here.

 

I got it for free, fully functional. But I can't remember if I should have payed. Works great with stock settings. (I needed to convert from .mkv and .avi to .mp4)

Exactly what I was looking for.

And it seems like that program is for free. Works just great for me
