Hi everyone. I have several hp z400 workstations, two of which have a quadro 4000. I get artifacts when I use either card in either system, but they're gone if I use my older quadro fx4600 (I also upgraded from 4 to 12gb of RAM while switching the card, but I don't think that could have affected the results). I already posted about this in the general troubleshoothing section, but since I replaced the card and the system now works, I thought it would be a better idea to start a new topic here about the specific issue that was identified. I find it hard to believe that both cards would be dead. Could it be something else ? Unsufficient power, bad drivers, overheating due to dust ? Or are they fried for good ?

Thanks in advance.

Could be any of those-- does the artifacting happen immediately or does it only happen once the machine has been running for a period of time?

If it's possible, check the card in a different system (home system?) with a beefier power supply. It's also a good idea to blow out the dust if they look bad.

To check temperatures, download the MSI Afterburner utility, as it can give you information on GPU temperatures over time.

Update drivers might be worth a try, also make sure the power plugs are fully seated on the card and that the card is fully seated in the motherboard.

Hopefully one of those works!

Update:

Cleaning: I opened the quadro with the least visible artifacts. As it had been used for a long time, there was a lot of dust inside. So much in fact that the blower fan wasn't able to push any air out at all (dust built up between the fan and heatsink). I does not overheat anymore, but I still get artifacts.

Drivers: I have installed windows 10 on the workstation using another card, I'll try with the cleaned quadro 4000 again, to see if the new drivers change anything, though I don't think they will, since my replacement card is even older.

Power: The workstations use 80+ bronze 450w PSUs, and have no problem powering my older quadro fx4600. This older quadro has a maximum power consumption of 134W, which it pretty close to the max 142W of the quadro 4000, so I don't think power is the issue. Besides, I can only use similar workstation PSUs, which I only have in 450W flavor, since standard ATX power supplies such as my G550M won't work with an HP z400.

Thanks for your help @bimmerman. I'll tell you if the newer drivers change anything.

Update: I tried with windows 10 and a 475W power supply. I still get artifacts, and the quadros aren't detected, not even in the bios. Unless anyone has another idea, I think it's safe to assume that both cards are fried.

Update: I finally tested both cards in my main system. One of them worked flawlessly, the other wouldn't even let me see my login screen (though I could still see my cursor when I moved it). I'd say one is fried and the other one is fine, but I might have missed something. Any other ideas ?
