Creating a pattern in Adobe Illustrator

Hey all,

 

I'm trying to create a logo for a website and have run into a roadblock with Adobe Illustrator.  I'm quite new to this program and am only using a free trial to create the desired logo.  Basically, I'm trying to produce a pattern in the "fill" area of a rectangle which will serve as the background of the logo.  However, for the life of me, I can't seem to find an option to do this.  Help?
