Blue Yeti - Big issues.

Hey all,

After looking around on the internet to find a solution to my problem, and finding almost nothing, I decided to turn to the LTT community to save me, and my money hopefully.

Around December of 2016 I bought the Blue Yeti microphone, in all black, and have been using it ever since. One thing I hadn't realised is how loud my voice was, and the amount of background noise it would pick up - even on the lowest gain. Though I had cardioid mode on, and the lowest gain possible I couldn't seem to find a reason as to why it would pick up noise from the keyboard behind it while playing or often amplify my voice though I would be sitting ~30cm away from the actual microphone.

I finally found a program called VoiceMeter which would actively alter my voice input, to be quiter and somewhat more crisp and clear. Problem solved..? Nope. The keyboard would still sound extremely loud and it seems as though whatever I do cannot fix this issue.

What could it be that I'm doing wrong, or missing?

No, you're not doing anything wrong, that's just how they are.  I know because I have one.  Some mics are designed to be right up to your mouth and don't really pick up anything else, but these are designed to be able to pick up the whole room, and that they do.  Only suggestion would be to put this up to your mouth on an arm or something and just speak quieter to avoid clipping, and then drop the volume in post or something.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

You might try a pop filter, it's not 100 percent but it will help. You can also edit the device inside windows it's self.

I'm pretty sure that is not what they are made for and all they do is not make your mouth noises so loud and stuff....

Thinking about this a bit more, while I don't think there's much if anything you can do with the mic, perhaps there's something you could do with the keyboard.  Is it mechanical?  If so, get dampers and make sure you're not using a clicky switch like MX blues.

Currently rocking the K70 LUX with Cherry MX browns, can you recommend me any dampers I can buy? Preferably an Amazon link (further preferably in the UK :)) Also, thanks for the very fast response.

I was wondering one further thing, what boom arm and pop filter could I get? For the pop filter I'd be looking to get one with a small scale factor, more like a foam cover style, or something similar yet effective. For the boom arm and the pop filter, they would both need to be black.. If you know anything please do send over a link :)

I don't know if it's necessarily the wrong mic - if he doesn't have a setup that would be conducive to a close range mic mounted on an arm brought right up to his mouth, this will allow it to be placed nearby but without the positioning being nearly as critical.  Sure with that comes background noise, but if it's that or constantly fluctuation voice noise due to not being able to do it any other way, this is the best option.

Another idea would be to wrap foam around the mic leaving only a hole pointing at your mouth to help increase the cardioid-ness of it.  The pickup patterns are cool for being able to pick omni and stereo, but from experience, there is little if any difference between cardioid and omni with these.

Pop filters are designed to take off the, well, pop created when making a "P" sound... I'm not sure they'd do much if anything for the keyboard noise.

As for dampers, something like this:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rubber-O-Ring-Dampeners-Cherry-keyboard/dp/B0187S4H1Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1498100310&sr=8-1&keywords=cherry+o+rings

There are different thicknesses and hardnesses which you can learn about here:

It shouldn't have to cost a lot.  After all, it's just some rubber o rings :P

Huge thanks for this, just ordered a set and should be coming very soon due to prime. Hopefully will turn out well.

I'm still hunting for a compatible boom arm with my microphone (in black) as well

as some form of pop filter, though I know neither of these will fix the issues of the keyboard they may help with the overall voice quality, so it would be a worth-while investment to me. Any suggestions appreciated, thanks.

Having Blue Yeti or $5000 Neumann large diaphragm condenser would not solve your problem. Large diaphragm condensers are really sensitive microphones and they will pick up every single noise from your room. Keyboard dampeners will help, but they will not solve the issue.

Pop filter helps in eliminating P, T, S sounds but only if the microphone is relatively close your mouth.

The only solution which would completely solve your issue is having a dynamic microphone. Downside is that those mics need to be really close to your mouth at all times. There are also some other cons and pros but those are studio usage related.
