If a washer is stated to be 2mm is that the inside hole diameter?

 

I bought a baggie of M3 and it states in brackets 3.2 so I measure the inside hole diameter and its 3.2mm so I know the ID of M3's are that. Most likely need M2's but I dont find non at the store I am browsing. Ackland Grainger has them, but thats not my store. Its a last resort.

 

I now have a couple hundred M3 washers that dont quite fit.

I see I have a half baggie of M5 (5.3) which measures out to 5.36mm inside diameter

Box of #6 is 4.08mm inside diameter of the hole and from this website http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/inches-mm-conversion-d_751.html it is actually 3.9688 mm.

 

From same website a #4 is 1/8" = 3.175mm which is just a tad smaller then my M3's at 3.2mm which as I stated are too large ID.

#4 washers are too large, then I need to look at #2 washers which is 3/32 = 2.38mm which would totally do because my overlap on 3.2mm is only 0.4mm which is fuck all.

 

 

So now knowing all this that #4 is too large then #2 would do.

Or best yet find M2 washers which like the previous example they are so close together. But my store doesnt sell M2's but they do sell #2.

Looks like inside diameter.

 

"M3" washer just means that it works with "M3" screws.  The true ID of an M3 washer is going to be just a hair bigger than M3 so it can actually fit through. 

 

I highly recommend using McMaster as a guide for real product dimensions.  They actually give CAD drawings of a lot of their hardware so you can look up "M3 washer" and see what the actual ID would probably be from *any* M3 washer mfg.  Example that I hope works: https://www.mcmaster.com/#90965a130/=185o0g7

That is what I am thinking as well, that the measurement they give in the title is the ID of the hole, in the "Technical" section its just the number they give in the title.

 

I am not using these washers with any bolt, but I am using them for spokes. I bought some wheel building spokes made of the customary brass and they were a little too flimsy for my liking, but the hole they went in was larger then normal. Obviously brass spoke washers were meant for foot power bicycle, while what I am building sure as shit aint no foot power.

 

I can just eyeball the holes of the washers I question with the known M2 and bring along my M3 washers, when I pick them up from the web order counter.

 

Home Depot only had down to M4, specialized fastener store only had down to M3, yet the electronics store I always buy stuff from had the washers I need. I am sure I looked for washers on their website, I am pretty darn sure.

 

Anywayzzzzzzzzz this saves me drilling holes in the flange and making my motor look hacked up. I also had an idea and I did buy some siding flashing and was going to make my own fucking washers with a drill bit and a grinder/skill-saw. Beats waiting on my order from China that will probably take 2 or 3 months.

 

Good news though b/c my generic china spokes havent come in yet.

 

I procrastinate real bad.

Washers are sized by the bolt/stud/screw that they are meant for. So an "M3" washer, is meant for a fastener with a 3mm diameter. At least for imperial units (unit system I am most familiar with), the inside diameter of a washer is typically 1/16" larger than the diameter of the fastener. For example, a washer for a 1/2-13UNC-2a bolt is going to have an inside diameter of 9/16". A washer for a 5/8-11UNC-2a bolt is going to have an inside diameter of 11/16". There are also acceptable tolerances for all types of machining; so the inside diameter of the washer is allowed to vary to a certain degree. Say typical shop practice is to machine to a tolerance of +-1/64". That means that any given washer hole can be up to but not exceeding 1/64" larger or smaller than the desired size.

I will order various sizes just to be one the safe side, having spares is always nice too. I've been in this pickle a couple times with spoke washers and too large of a flange hole for the spoke. Typical Chinese quality.
