Hey everyone, like the title says, I was wondering if I can just move my Boot Drive from one PC to the another. I'm asking because of two reasons.

  1. I heard that Windows 10 keys integrate into the MoBo, since I'm switching that, I'm worried it'll create a problem.
  2. I'm changing Motherboards so will that create a conflict in the drives?

I really don't want to do a clean install unless it's the only thing I can do.

Thank you all for your comments!

I forgot to mention my Key is an OEM.

I believe you can tie your key to your Microsoft account now days as long as it's Windows 10.

@GoodBytes feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

I believe you would have to do a clean install due to the motherboard's drivers. If wrong, feel free to correct me. Of course assuming that it's a different motherboard.

That might work, I thought it was weird, couple weeks ago I did clean install on my desktop and laptop and they didn't ask to activate.

Yeah, I'm switching Motherboards, that's why I'm worried.

Generally your OS will try to find recognised hardware when you boot from it, and if it doesn't, it could cause issues. I've had problems like that with a bunch of older systems (Win 95/XP). Give it a try, but if it doesn't work, a fresh install might just be the easiest way to go.

Alright, I'll try and see if it works, if now, just clean install I guess, worst come to worst, I'll just get another OEM Key.

If there's a way to deactivate Windows on your current PC and just use it unlicensed to transfer files across, then use that key on the new PC, that could work.

Looks like Goodbytes approves. You should be all set to use the key again as long as it's tied to the/your Microsoft account.

1.Since my keys is not oem i dont know what to say but just to be sure your windows will be deactivated if u move it into another mobo.

2.Depends if that happen all u need to do is to enter safe mode and use DDU to uninstall gpu driver which is the most common problem and uninstall another driver. But tbh i have move windows a lot from another pc to another pc and windows will automatically identify the driver for your mobo and install it on its own.

But not with GPU driver idk why sometimes they just crashed and give me a BSOD but not always.

So just wanted to give an update to all, the drive worked fine, but it did made me buy a new license key. So I decided to just do a clean install since I had a new key.

You decided to not tie the key to your Microsoft account?

I swtiched out motherboards on my OEM PC with windows 8.1 key and it unverified it.  But I went through a process in settings with some verifying the product id and it activated it so that should work (note you cannot do a fresh install of windows using the oem key.  I learned that the hard way)

I've done clean installs with my OEM before.

I would ask Microsoft live chat support for help then, as long as you have your keys you should be set for activation and they should be able to help on that particular matter.
