Not really

All you are getting are 2 extra cores and slightly better performance.

I will be manly gaming but will also be streaming and video editing, is it still not worth it then?

Hi,

Simple question, is it worth upgrading an i7-4790 to a R5 1600?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, because you will use DDR4 and more cores also threads

no, because that i7 is just like i7 7700K and that means this i7 competes with Ryzen 7

No. It'd be a waste of time and possibly money.

If that's the case, then its really up to you. You wont see a big jump in gaming but will see a difference in productivity/streaming etc.

If you're doing video editing and stuff then maybe, because it would be a bit faster. However if you're going to be spending $500 on RAM and MOBO and CPU just spend $600 and get the Ryzen 7 to make it an actual substantial upgrade. If you're gaming then the 4790 will perform basically the same and there's no point in upgrading.

Okay, from what I can see, there is no notable difference in gaming, however in editing there is a slight speed increase. How noticeable is this?

Enough to see one.

http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-4790-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-1600/2293vs3919

The workstation says that it is 18% better.

The workstation says that it is 18% better.

1) UBM uses hundreds of different combinations and includes those PC's whose systems could have issues as verified tests. Don't take UBM as law if you're only pulling from there or any synthetic for that matter.

2) It's about time that AMD makes a chip that stands among Intel's offerings.

3) Ryzen has only seen gains in rendering. i5's match R5's in gaming performance while i7's go higher in performance.

4) The performance difference isn't so high to require spending the money and time on a new platform.

Okay,

I have compiled 2 new parts lists that are Ryzen and Haswell based.

Ryzen: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/MittensKazotsky/saved/8vsD3C

Haswell: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/rQxvtJ

What's interesting is, is that I managed to include a great wireless solution and better RAM for less than the Ryzen system. Yes, I did include a 3rd party cooler for the intel build, but their stock cooler was and always will be inadequate, so that's why. Even deducting the price, Ryzen costs less. So, in conclusion, I think I am going to go with Ryzen due to it's workstation benefits, and potential future proof-ness on an AM4 platform. @ARikozuM @g12601

Seems like good reasoning. Go for it, though I think you could stand to wait one more release to see what Intel or AMD produces now that competition is definite.
