  1. 1. Which mobile combo should I pick?

    • OnePlus 3T [370 USD] + Lenovo Y520-15IKBN (GTX 1050 2GB) [680 USD]; Total: [1,050 USD]
      5
    • OnePlus 5 [~479 USD] + Acer Aspire E5-475G-55BD (940MX 2GB) [500 USD]; Total: [~979 USD]

I recently sold my OnePlus 3 to my sister after owning it for just 2 months because I plan on getting something better. So, I came up with these 2 "mobile combos" and I need you guys to help me pick which combo'd be the best in terms of performance, value for money and productivity. I'm still studying which is why building a desktop (even a mini-ITX one) doesn't appeal to me.

COMBO 1

OnePlus 3TLenovo Y520-15IKBN; Total: [1,050 USD]

This combo is the more expensive one while having near-flagship devices. With the OnePlus 3T, I would still get really good performance on the cheap, but there are a few cons such as its camera's incapability in low light, average battery life and also the fact that it is going to lose its flagship title in a few days due to the debut of the OnePlus 5.  The Lenovo Y520, on the other hand, makes up for it by having a pretty powerful desktop GTX 1050 paired with a decently powerful i5-7300U, which will allow me to be productive and game at the same time. A 4GB RAM upgrade is definitely needed though, but that is a small matter.

COMBO 2

OnePlus 5 (Coming soon) + Acer Aspire E5-475G-55BD; Total [~979 USD]

This combo is slightly cheaper than the first one while having a flagship and an entry-level device at the same time. The OnePlus 5 has already proven to destroy every single phone in leaked GeekBench benchmarks with its Qualcomm Snapdragon 835. The camera's capability in low-light (images leaked by Carl Pei), its battery life improvement over the OnePlus 3T due to the more efficient SoC, plus the bragging rights I'd get for owning a flagship really makes me really want this phone. However, I have to sacrifice a little by lowering my graphical settings when gaming on the Acer Aspire E5-475G, due to the weaker, entry-level 940MX as compared to the more powerful GTX 1050 in the Lenovo Y520. Productivity wouldn't take much of a hit since the i5-7200U is a pretty capable dual core chip, so I needn't worry much in that department.

So, which combo should I go with? Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks! :)

I've recently stopped gaming due to my laptop getting stolen :(, but I'll definitely get back into gaming once I get a new one. I play Forza Motorsport 6, Far Cry 4, Watch_Dogs, Metro 2033, Metro: Last Light, Tomb Raider (2012), Need for Speed: Rivals and PayDay 2 :).

Some of this might be due to the fact that it has an SSHD rather than SSD, but:

Extremely slow after restarts or updates (2-3min before Chrome can be opened)

CPU bottlenecks the iGPU in Overwatch (lol)

Multitasking can be OK but I would NOT recommend a mobile dualcore for ANY form of gaming except TF2 or minecraft

I think the slowness after restarts are related to the drive, as I experienced it too, before I added an SSD into my older laptop.
Why'd you use an iGPU in Overwatch, though? The i5-6200U on my old laptop didn't bottleneck my 920M at all, and I had around (on lowest settings with a little MSAA) 40 FPS in Forza Motorsport 6, about 30 FPS in Watch_Dogs and no less than 25 FPS in Far Cry 4. I thought to myself, "If a system like mine can perform like so, what would it be like to get something like a GTX 1050, which most call 'not worth it' or 'weak'." Hell, I could only imagine what I could do with a GTX 1050 (Or even a 940MX).

Multitasking and overall system performance skyrocketed when I added an SSD into my system and made it the boot and main drive. My laptop originally came with 4GB of RAM and I upgraded it to 8GB, and till today, that is certainly a must.

I'd pick the first plan: worse phone, better laptop

The phone might no longer be the "current flagship", but that's only a name. It's not old enough to be slow or outdated. It can still run mobile games smooth.

The quad core laptop is why I prefer this plan. For the games you mentioned, the i5 6200U and 940MX pair won't cut your requirements unless you don't mind turning down the settings to "lowest", sometimes even to lower resolutions as well. FYI, my experience is based on my now sold Acer Aspire laptop with i7 6500u and 940MX.
