Well, you can do that. It just depends on whether your motherboard can boot from an SD card or not.

 

If you get a high performance SD card, it wouldn't even suck. Though I'm always concerned about the longevity of SD cards - cheaper ones often require frequent reformats.

 

Dell actually sells servers that come with bootable SD cards using a special vFlash reader - these are often used for ESXi VM servers.
