So I was watching This Jayz2cents video about Increasing FPS without overclocking and it make me wonder if I can do this with my XFX RS RX 480 Triple X 8GB on my GA-78LMT-USB3 6.0. I was looking through the manual and couldn't find the limits anyone have any ideas or should I hold off till I have the money to upgrade the board?

I believe most 480s are starved for power in it's default state, so increase the power limit would improve your performance by allowing the card to remain in it's high performance state without regard for TDP.

That would TECHNICALLY be increasing the fps without overclocking.

Well ya but idk if my cheepo motherboard will be ?

I highly doubt you'll have any problems. I was going to say, while you're in there, you can actually reduce the voltage on the card by about 100mv or so at it's stock frequency, and it'll run cooler and use less power as well.  My reference pulls about 140w at stock settings, and 110w maximum with the reduced voltage and increased power limit.

Cool, I need to get a wattage meter for my computer to make sure I'm not reaching my PSUs capacity before I bump it up but I think I should be fine. I did just upgrade from a Sapphire R9 280X Vapor-X. I think it did 220w or something now that I think about it

Dood you have 600w psu, you could run 6 rx480 off that xD

Ya I thought about it after I said it.

Just wacky power limit upto +50, stick +50mv on voltage and 100mhz on the core then set the memory to 2125 and your good to go.

I'll give it a go when I get home. Messing with this stuff remotely while in a car at 5AM isn't the best idea xD now to look into overclocking my 8350.

There is no reason to increase the voltage on a 480. They come overvolted as it is.

20% is fine. It's just that the card throttles at stock limits.

So WattMan only lets me increase power limit by 20.

use sapphire trixx, it is much better :) i guess you card might only have a +20% power limit.

there is if you want to get the most performance out of it. it does come overvolted out the box cos then it would be some magic voodoo shit. out the box is stock :P

When I can decrease the voltage by 200mv and retain the same clocks and actually improve performance, it's overvolted. =p

no, you have undervolted it which is the wrong way round. thats like buying an nissan gtr and remapping it for fuel economy xD

you should have overclocked it as far as you could on the stock voltage until it stopped performing better or crashed. otherwies you might as well of just bought a rx470 and overclocked that.

He isn't planning on overclocking it, so why would he increase the voltage? That's like putting a turbo on your car and not remapping the ECU.

if you read my comment above i recommended overclocking it as well as raising the voltage xD

no 1450 for the decent cards. my rx480 is 1338 stock

Either way, I still say good enough. No amount of overclocking is going to overcome the physical differences between the cards. They aren't equivalent which was the entire point of their release in tbe first place. =/

no they are the exactly same card, one just has a way high power limit, stock voltage and a decent cooler.
