I'm looking into getting a 7700k for my next build, but I came across this mega thread on the Intel forums concerning large temperature spikes, and now I'm a little worried. From what I've gathered, the 7700k spikes up by about 20-30C on the desktop when opening simple apps such as Chrome. Although, I recall someone saying that the spikes are less severe (but still happen) under load. This isn't just one guy experiencing it either as there's about 50 people testifying the same thing. And these chips already run very hot, so temp spikes on top of that doesn't seem ideal. In the end, Intel basically said there's nothing wrong, but that could just be damage control on their part. Can anyone who has this particular chip, or just someone knowledgeable on the subject, shed some light on this for me?

I'm kind of a n00b, so excuse anything that I say that sounds dumb.

7700k is not the chip u should be looking at for a start (grab a r7 1700 its just flat out better) what intel is very much just damage control there telling you not to overclock a chip you payed more for to have unlocked its BS

This PC is mainly to play SW: Battlefront 2 when it releases in November. I know the 1700 actually outperforms the 7700k in BF1, but will the same be true for SW: Battlefront 2 because they're both on the same engine (FB3)?

If you want to keep the temperature down on your cpu, pick up an aftermarket cooler, or just simply water cool your system for better performance in terms of cpu temperatures. Make sure to keep your cpu cool and keep monitoring your cpu temperature when overclocking.

My i7 7700K hovers around 65 Celsius to 75 Celsius on stock speeds for gaming on a beefy Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro 3 heatsink. However on Prime95 it runs at 88 Celsius max which is very high for stock speeds. It's most likely due to me having a bad chip but most people report that their i7 7700K still run extremely hot.
