Underclocking and undervolting R9 290X?

Hello, I suppose I have an issue here - as a friend of mine has lost some cables from his modular power supply, he can't yet replace his GTX 670 which I would be getting otherwise. As my power supply should be able to just about handle it, he handed me a R9 290X Lightning (another hand down from another friend) for the time being. Now the issue - I don't want to risk anything with my PSU, so I would like to undervolt and underclock the GPU. Is that easily possible, or can I expect some issues? Or should I just keep my GTX 560 for a couple more weeks? Or should I just stop worrying and start again once I run into actual issues?

Hardware:

Xeon e5649 @4 GHz (6 core) + EKL Brocken Eco

MSI x58 Pro-E

6x4GB DDR3

R9 290X Lightning

Samsung 840 Evo 250 GB

250 GB Samsung 7.2kRPM HDD (could live without this, but I doubt it'll make a relevant difference with power consumption)

Asus Xonar DGX (could live without this, but I doubt it'll make a relevant difference with power consumption)
Be Quiet! Pure Power L8 530W modular power supply
Case: top of the cardboard box the board arrived in, at least for now (have some plans for that)

Xeon e5649@4.4 GHz on Asus Rampage II Extreme or Gigabyte x58a-OC (whatever I feel like to set up at a time) , 6x4 GB Kingston HyperX 1600, Gainward GTX 670 Phantom, Samsung 840 Evo 240 GB, BeQuiet L8 530W

it will depend on you, do your research, you will be fine.

if you don't want to risk it this is the best solution.

I don't think you need any detune for a r9 290x to run with your system, and it will be a nice upgrade to both performance and heat output. Just make sure you don't overclock the card.

Just use MSI Afterburner and move the slider, as simple as that. Your PC will probably freeze if it too low but that's ok.
