I am thinking of upgrading to ryzen, but am unsure what to upgrade to. I mostly game but am probably gonna start livestreaming, whether that be through elgato or screen. I also work with photoshop sometimes and video edit sometimes. So which one would you guys recommend? I have to save up either way (challenging since I'm not old enough for a proper job at most places) but I'll probably have an influx of money for my bday coming up (enough for the 1600 probably), so at Microcenter I could get the 1600 with a mobo and ram for 330, and a 1700x for 450 (1700 would be more money/the same, cant remember) So what would you recommend? (Talk\ing USD btw)

If you can wait, the extra 2c/4t would help with multinthreaded tasks. If you aren't streaming or doing video editing and such, the 1600 should be fine. It's what I'm leaning towards so far.

How similarly do they perform in gaming? Cause I think the 1600 would be fine for me (streaming, some recording, some editing and such) but I heard that they perform the same since the 1700(x) just has more cores and is the same cpu pretty much, is that correct?

a 1600 should be able to stream just fine, but if rendering time, completely smooth 1080p 60FPS streaming with no FPS drops at all, or an RGB stock cooler is important to you, then get the 1700(X)

BTW the 1700 comes with a cooler, and the 1700X doesn't. just FYI

depends how professional your streaming and content creation is.

(also maybe use your old PC as a streaming box?)

Yeah, AFAIK, it's just more cores. It's not any faster, just better at multithreaded apps and such. Should be the same for gaming.

Not very lol. 1080p 30 or 720p 60 is all I really need (although 1080p 60 would be possible if through an elgato, right? (with 1600)

And I was thinking of building a PC for my sister with my current cpu.

And the point where the 8 cores would significantly matter more for gaming would be past the the am5 or whatever release date... So should I go 1600? Can it handle 1080p 60fps through elgato and maybe 1080p 60 on lighter games like csgo? And would it be able to record at atleast 1080p 30 on more intense games?

720p60 is the sweet spot IMO with non Twitch partners. 1080p60 even just recently most professional streamers were using 900p60

Yea after I posted it I thought about it lol. So I guess 1600 is it! And upgrade in 2 years maybe..? (unless it still works amazingly) AMD said 4 years until AM5 right?

the 1600 will last you a lot more than 2 years.

but yes, AMD says that AM4 will last at least until 2020

Basically, if you play a game optimised for 4 cores (pretty much all of them except for the newest), it'll have 2c/4t available for encoding and streaming. It'll work, that's for sure. You could probs stream in a 4c/4t CPU, it wouldn't be the best, but it'd work.

Would it last the lifespan of AM4 (hard question, ik, you can ignore this if you wanna lol) but thanks for your help!

IDK, I think AMD is sticking with AM4 for quite a bit. If you want a top of the line CPU, I'd get the 1700.
