Dual channel. New to Pc building

My computer has a dual channel up to 8gb of ddr3 ram. Is that 8 gb of ram for each channel or for both channels? If it's for both channels, I have (2x4gb) ram sticks do I put one in each channel or do I put both in one channel

4Gb per channel and is only active if DIMMs are inserted into colour coordinated slots. ie. 4 Slots, 2 grey and 2 black, only use both the black sockets or grey sockets. With 2 sticks of Ram don't use one grey and one black if you want the dual channel.

I suck a typing, preparw for typos.

Read the motherboard manual on where to put the correct RAM
