I built my first PC about 7 months ago. It has an:

 - MSI H81M-E33

 - Intel Pentium G3258

 - Kingston HyperX 8GB, 1333MHz

 - XFX RX 460, 4GB

I'm thinking of upgrading this summer, but I can't decide what to do.

a, Intel Core i3-4170

b, AMD FX-6300 + Asrock N68-GS4

They both cost the same (33000HUF, ~120USD), but I want both a reasonable upgrade path, and a good performance at the moment. If I go the AMD route, I'll still keep the current board and CPU, and build a system around it from scrap parts. That might be fun.

I wouldn't move to the AMD fx. The pentium G4560 makes more sense, but see if you can get a Haswell i5 instead. It should be cheaper than the combined price of the cpu, motherboard and ram.

The cheapest Haswell i5 I could fin was still 70$ more than the G4560 and a board. Is Kaby Lake or Skylake worth it? Should I get a Kaby (or Skylake) Pentium or i3? Sticking with Haswell seems to be the most viable option. G4560 and board is also about 120$.

save up for a 4770, FX is dead, if you have to jump to an AMD platform save up for ryzen.

Ryzen... Maybe a Ryzen 3, That's something I could actually afford.

Does that include RAM? Because the G4560 needs new DDR4 RAM as well.

No it doesn't. If I want to stay close to the 120$ budget, I'd have to give up 4GB of RAM. Cheapest DDR4 RAM is ~30$, the cheapest 8GB stick is 70$.

"Why not 2x4GB?" - Board only has 2 slots, so if I want to upgrade, I'll have to get rid of 4GB, making the upgrade more expensive.

Then get the Haswell i5 instead, as per my original suggestion.
