After assembling rig and installing windows, PC worked ok. I installed and played some games. Now every time I shut it down, when I turn it on I get this screen: (posted below)

In order to boot properly, I have to shut it down and flip the switch on my psu to off for about 30 seconds or so, and then flip it back on and power on. When I do this it seems to work for now.

Anybody know what causes this or how to fix?

1. Update the bios to the latest one off the website https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/ROG-STRIX-Z270E-GAMING/HelpDesk_Download/

2. Reset the BIOS via CMOS, (If it has the jumper system use that otherwise unplug the system and press power button to make sure theres no power left over and remove CMOS battery for 10 or so seconds and replace it to its original position and see what happens) Of course both these options WILL reset any settings in the BIOS.

3. Check your boot order.

This screen means Windows has nothing to boot off of. So most likely your BIOS is rearranging the boot order. This is common and has happened to me a lot in the past, it is also more common if you've installed Windows in UEFI mode.

There are many reasons why the BIOS can suddenly change the boot order; trying to boot from USB devices that are connected, trying to boot from other SATA devices inside your PC or it can even be a faulty boot drive (unlikely in your case).

When you installed Windows did you remove all other SATA devices apart from the target drive?

In the meantime try this:

  • Disconnect all USB devices
  • Disconenct all SAYA devices (apart from boot drive)
  • Load into the BIOS and make sure your boot option #1 is your boot drive (or Windows Boot Manager)
  • Load into Windows and then shut down again
  • Recconect all SATA and USB devices
  • Turn the PC on and boot into BIOS
  • Make sure your boot drive is still boot option #1
  • Save and exit the BIOS

That is it, see if that fixes the issues. If problem persists go into the boot menu and keep checking that your BIOS isn't resetting the boot order.

What do I want as the top boot priority in my bios? Windows boot manager or the drive I installed windows to.

So if I'm using a 950 evo m.2 and I put in my windows 10 flash drive and turn on my pc, the bios pops up. I can select which drive I wanna install windows to.

After I install windows, what do I want as the top priority boot? The listed options are my M.2 which I just installed windows to. There's my hard drive, but still by default the top spot has "windows boot manager" as the default 1st priority. Do I want to change this to my M.2 that I just installed windows to?

Hi

Do you shut down your computer or put it in to sleep?

I had this problem and my ram caused the problem . Actually when i was playing around in bios and ram timings, I accidentally decreased the ram voltage so they couldn't keep the information during sleep and it caused that black screen problem from me.

So go and check that your rams are getting the right amount of voltage.

I'm suspicious at bios too. Look for bios updates.  What's your boot drive?

Go to your bios and check the boot order. The bios might be trying to boot from a wrong device.

Have a nice day

You want Windows Boot Manager, that is what's Windows creates if you install in UEFI, always make sure that boot option #1.

P.S. Remeber to directly quote/reply to my post so I get notified and know to come back.

I had windows boot manager as the top priority. Now I'm back to square one not knowing what the issue was. I just don't understand why this stupid thing works on first boot but after I shut down from windows it doesn't. Pisses me off and makes me wanna buy pre-built, but then I get pissed at that bc this SHOULD work. Linus can scrape together junk on scrapyard wars and get it to work and I can't get new top of the line components to work? This is ridiculous

I know, I know. I have a custom pre - built and had just as many problems. Mainly with my screens not being detected, still haven't figured it out to this day, been happening since January. But this topic isn't about me so I'll shut up - just wanted to let you know I feel your pain, panic turns into anger very fast.

Somethtkng must must be wrong with your Windows install or boot drive, it could be something else but the only time I've seen this screen it has something to do with boot drive or boot corruption issues.

And sorry for asking again but did you remove all USB devices and SATA devices (excerpt boot drive)  and see if it still does it?

Hi Jboord44,

Export and attach in a zip file your event logs (application/system).

Thanks

Hi @Jboord44

Hey no problem, my fault for assuming. Here you go:

1) From the search type: Event Viewer

2) Double click to expand Windows logs

3) Right click on Application and save all events as and save it to your desktop

4) do the same for System

5) Attach the files saved to your next reply. Hoping it works.

Cheers!

@Jboord44 AHHH, see I understood that it would do that ONLY the first time you powered it on and then after a quick reboot it would work.

Alright, well here is something obscure to try. Unplug EVERYTHING from the computer Aside from the monitor. See if it does anything. If it does you're looking at one of your peripherals (I've seen that happen before especially with printer cables and cell phone charger cables, blackberry cables were notorious for this)

If it still fails. Open it up, remove everything from the board, SATA, video card, ram. then power it on

If it beeps the typical memory code beep, (if you have a PC speaker on that board) There's a solid chance its not your motherboard or CPU.

Hook one stick of memory, if it does not beep and freezes and wont let you go to BIOS, its most likely memory (test the other sticks individually to make sure)

And build up from there. Once you have a failure. Let me know.
