Hello all, I've been a LinusTechTips watcher for a couple of years and decided to join the forum.

I recently bought a computer off a friend for half its retail worth. I was busy with exams so I used it on his account for a month or two and no problems. He left it in his attic and so the dust in the case was atrocious so I decided to do a clean of the insides just this week. After installing an SSD in the system and doing a clean reinstall of Windows I've found the PC way noisier than it used to be. I've tracked the source to the CPU cooler fan (Hyper Evo 212 heatsink) and now it seems to be running incredibly high 1566rpm even when my CPU temps are mid 20 degrees. I've tried updating my BIOS firmware and used the GIGABYTE app centre to no avail. Any solution, is it just a broken fan and I should just buy a new cooler?

Heatsink itself is not affecting anything, its only purpose is to be in contact with CPU and dissapate heat. So u might just need a new 120mm fan.

As mentioned before, apply new thermal paste and adjust the fan curve in the bios.

Hopefully mobo is fine because if it isnt and fan connector is somehow malfunctioning, then I got no further advice as in my case I have to connect CPU fan to specific connector otherwise windows refuses to boot lol.

I've tried doing it in the BIOS and setting it to 'silent' mode but the fan still retains at 1500rpm. I have some thermal paste on order, I'll try that. If that doesn't work then I guess I'll just buy a whole new cooler ><

Do custom curve. Dont use the presets (just because it seems to do nothing for you).

Okay, so I turned it off and did something else for a bit and rebooted. And now I'm getting a CPU temp of -55C??? I have some thermal paste on order if that is the issue. I have tried the custom curve too, so problem solved I guess? Just CPU temp is worrying me.

It's a faulty reading. Ignore it.

Fan has 1600rpm max speed so it isn't that high. And Gigabyte is probably worst choice when it comes to fan control. Your options are to use Silence preset or Speedfan. Watch or read some tutorials to learn it.

Just an update on my previous, I've just started it up again and the fan is again running at 1550rpm as soon as it boots. Thermal compound will be here in the next few hours, will update.

Fan auto-runs at 1550rpm at boot (read first post) and yeah man :/ I've tried a custom curve in the bios and silent mode presets too, makes no difference. For some reason, once, it went back to 600rpm but now its 1500rpm again ><

Do you have latest BIOS? That can do something. I'm Gigabyte owner and know the struggle with its fan control options. Currently all my fans run with Speedfan.

Yep, I'm on F21. I've tried speedfan too. I've replaced the thermal paste (been meaning to replace it anyway). It may just be the fan itself, anyone got any recommendations for another 120mm fan to stick onto the Hyper Evo 212 cooler? I can just take the brackets off the old one and screw them into the new one. Hopefully that'll solve the issue since my other two case fans are run fine and quiet. I'll order one and report back.

Have you tried running the fan off of another header?
