Mad GPU usage fluctuation + Stutter at 60FPS

I recently bought AMD RX580 4GB version and while the card is working fine, I have some problems with stuttering.

For example when I play Battlefield 1, it says it's running at 60FPS (constantly, sometimes drops to like 58FPS for a split second) but often, it stutters like it's 30FPS, especially when turning or moving around. When I used afterburner to monitor the GPU usage levels and CPU usage levels, I noticed that GPU Usage fluctuates crazily, often going from 0 to 100 repeatedly. Is it possible that this behavior is linked to the stuttering issue and if so, what is the significance of this behavior and how can it be fixed?

What CPU is it? It seems to be hitting 100% a lot, which could be the cause of the stuttering.

How much ram do you have and what's ram usage like while gaming?

I have 16GB RAM - Corsair Vengeance 2400MHz 16GB (2x8GB), usage around 6500MB-7000MB.

(Had 8GB till today, but thought it might be the RAM, so I upgraded to 16GB, still the same issue)

Might seem weird but try downclocking your GPU a bit, maybe to 1100 MHz or so. See if stuttering is still there.

Updated graphics driver but this still happens - the stuttering seems to have improved a bit though

Try resetting it and plugging it back in firmly to make sure it's not faulty but if it doesn't work RMA time

I'll try that later when I am back home.On a related note, it seems like some other people also have this same issue but the response to those threads is that this kind of behavior is normal for some cards (mostly AMD cards like R9 390). So I am a little confused about whether this actually is an issue that causes the stuttering.

And if I were to RMA the card, what would be the reason/problem that I should provide?

I tried both and it doesn't seem to make much difference in terms of stuttering - only gets rid of the screen tearing in some games.

As for the actual behavior in the monitoring software, I haven't tested that yet. Will post an update here when I get back home.

hmm, the only time I experienced something similar to this is prior to installing a pre-requisite driver for Gears of War 4 when it released.  Before installation, it was stuttering like crazy; after, I was able to lock it to a perfect 60fps.

I had the exact same issue and I resolved it by doing this:

  • Reseat the CPU cooler with a fresh thermal paste
    • The main cause for stuttering in my case due to cooler's poor contact with CPU
    • Higher temperatures can cause thermal throttling, causing a bottleneck from the CPU
  • Secure a good airflow for the CPU and the GPU by re-positioning the case fans with airflow in mind or get a better case
  • Take out the GPU, use a can duster and blow both the PCI-E slot and the card

Try these and update on this thread whether the issue is resolved
