1080 gaming with 1060 6 gig gpu

Hi my son would like to see better fps, and he thinks our monitor is the bottleneck

have I-5 6600K at stock gtx1060 6 gig at stock, games running at 60 fps, if switch to a 144htz monitor would it increase?  Would it be better to get a 2K or 4 K monitor?  How much better over standard 1080 monitor by Acer? Or Samsung?

disable vsync if you want to view how much fps your 1060 will get at that resolution and settings, if it goes past 60fps then your monitor is the bottleneck.

The monitor is only the bottleneck if you have V-sync on, as it limits your FPS to what the monitor can display. A higher refresh rate could be better, but if you keep a steady 50-60fps in most games, it pros isn't worth it. And 1440p is about the highest you could do with a 1060, and you may have to turn down some settings.

A 144Hz monitor would theoretically let you run games at up to 144FPS, yes, but most games will require much more powerful graphics cards to be run at higher than 60FPS.

Though 60fps is still perfectly playable, unless he's really competitive in Overwatch or CS:GO, so it may not be worth the price to upgrade. Though if you have the money, by all means do it.

if your gpu doesn't go past 60fps, then you either have to reduce settings after upgrading to a 144hz monitor, get a better gpu.

Son is getting good at Overwatch, not sure if vsync is on, how do I tell?  It is connected via dvi Acer or Samsung both have DVI or hdmi, but hdmi being used for Vive, setup

Check in the game's settings. there should be a VSync option there.

go to overwatch settings and click on video. a game like overwatch will be much better with a high refresh-rate monitor and i'm pretty confident the 1060 can run it at 144fps.

If he's really into Overwatch, from everything I know about it you need a really high fps. Like @herman mcpootis said, a 1060 6GB should run overwatch at 144fps just fine, as it isn't a super demanding game. A 144hz 1080p monitor shouldn't be super expensive and should work fine.

I got my LG 60Hz monitor to 75Hz. No visual difference to me, but might work for others
