why is the actual available formatted size different on the same phone with different storage options, despite the fact that each of the phone runs the exact same software out-of-the-box?

 

Example: available free space-

128GB: approx. 114GiB

64GB: approx. 56.5GiB

32GB: approx. 27.5GiB

16GB: approx. 11.5GiB

It is due to formatting differences. Ever notice why you can't use 1TB of a 1TB drive? Formatting and the fact that storage manufacturers calculate size differently.

why does the same software that takes up 4.5gb on one iphone 16gb take up 12gb on iphone 128gb? (same applies to other storage devices and phones)

Its like a 1tb hard drive only reads at 900 something, if iOS is like windows (I have no clue if it is for this case) it actually uses Gibibytes instead of Gigabytes when inside the OS to display storage size.

But you can use 1TB of a 1TB drive. They show as 931GB in Windows but they are actually 931GiB which is the same as 1TB. (also, 1Tb is 1 Terabit, much smaller than 1TB which is 1 Terabyte).

The space used by the OS does seem a little off. I'd expect the 128GB version to have more space taken by the OS as they can afford to "unpack" it. The size used on the 32GB model seems off to me. 

 

128GB = 5GiB used

64GB = 3GiB used

32GB = 2.3GiB used

16GB = 3.4GiB used
