Getting hacked?

A question just came up in my mind. How do hackeds which install malware on your device get your information. Does a little notepad pop up with your credentials. Cause that's how the internet is portraying this to me. Not only that but can't you use a malware to recover accounts you lost or passwords?

Keylogging, dumping the Chrome password cache, dumping Lastpass/1Password extensions, dumping the Mac keychain.. many exploits

Best I can suggest is if you're doing something shady, meaning you think it may not be safe, use a VM with Linux Mint to minimize threats to your host OS.
