Expert's Opinion Required on Custom Built PC or, Brand PC

Hello,

I am thinking about a custom build as mentioned below:

1x Corsair Graphite Series 760T White Full Tower Windowed
1x Cooler Master 850W 80+ Gold - Fully Modular 850W 80 PLUS Gold
1x Gigabyte Aorus Z270X Gaming 8 (rev. 1.0) Motherboard
1x Intel® Core™ i7-7700K (7th Generation) Processor
1x Corsair Vengeance® LPX 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 DRAM 3000MHz
1x Corsair Force Series™ LE 480GB SATA 3 6Gb/s SSD
2x WD 2TB Internal Hard Drive (Blue) 3.5” SATA 7200RPM
1x Gigabyte GC-WB867D-I Wi-Fi/Bluetooth Combo PCI
1x Corsair Hydro Series™ H110i GT 280mm Liquid CPU Cooler
1x Corsair Gaming K95 RGB Mechanical Gaming Keyboard, Cherry MX Brown
1x Razer DeathAdder Elite - The Esports Gaming Mouse
1x NZXT HUE+ Advanced PC Gaming Lighting Control
3x NZXT Aer RGB Digitally Controlled RGB LED Fans

Note: I already have 3x 21.5 Inch HP Monitors and a NVIDIA GPU (4GB DDR5).
So please ignore monitor and GPU part & also if I wrote anything wrong.

First fo all I need your opinions on this build like if I should replace any of these with anything else or anything you wish to recommend. My budget is $2000 USD - $2300 USD maximum.

However, many suggesting me to go with brand PCs which built with Server grade processors (example HP Workstation Computers). I know I can't get whatever I like you Brand PCs still performance matters. I need your opinion again on this matter.

Please note that I am not a gamer and not building this PC for gaming either. It's just for heavy workload and a hobby:)

Thanks.

First of all: is your workload multithreaded in any way? If so, go for a Ryzen 7 1700 and the same cooler you have and overclock the spit out of it (3.9/4Ghz). It's got 8 physical cores and 16 threads and trades blows with the i7 6900k, which is a $1000 USD processor.

idk

And the PSU is a little over par. I don't think you'll need 850 Watts.

Main System:

Anghammarad : Asrock Taichi x570, AMD Ryzen 7 5800X @4900 MHz. 32 GB DDR4 3600, some NVME SSDs, Gainward Phoenix RTX 3070TI

System 2 "Igluna" AsRock Fatal1ty Z77 Pro, Core I5 3570k @4300, 16 GB Ram DDR3 2133, some SSD, and a 2 TB HDD each, Gainward Phantom 760GTX.

System 3 "Inskah" AsRock Fatal1ty Z77 Pro, Core I5 3570k @4300, 16 GB Ram DDR3 2133, some SSD, and a 2 TB HDD each, Gainward Phantom 760GTX.

On the Road: Acer Aspire 5 Model A515-51G-54FD, Intel Core i5 7200U, 8 GB DDR4 Ram, 120 GB SSD, 1 TB SSD, Intel CPU GFX and Nvidia MX 150, Full HD IPS display

Media System "Vio": Aorus Elite AX V2, Ryzen 7 5700X, 64 GB Ram DDR4 3200 Mushkin, 1 275 GB Crucial MX SSD, 1 tb Crucial MX500 SSD. IBM 5015 Megaraid, 4 Seagate Ironwolf 4TB HDD in raid 5, 4 WD RED 4 tb in another Raid 5, Gainward Phoenix GTX 1060

(Abit Fatal1ty FP9 IN SLI, C2Duo E8400, 6 GB Ram DDR2 800, far too less diskspace, Gainward Phantom 560 GTX broken need fixing)

Nostalgia: Amiga 1200, Tower Build, CPU/FPU/MMU 68EC020, 68030, 68882 @50 Mhz, 10 MByte ram (2 MB Chip, 8 MB Fast), Fast SCSI II, 2 CDRoms, 2 1 GB SCSI II IBM Harddrives, 512 MB Quantum Lightning HDD, self soldered Sync changer to attach VGA displays, WLAN

I will be running Windows 10 Pro and Multiple VMs using VMWARE Workstation Pro. Should I really go with Ryzen CPU instead of i7-7700K?

Buying server hardware for desktop use doesn't make sense, don't buy brand pcs if you can build your own.

I would suggest a ryzen 1700 over the 7700k if games are not a concern. The rest is fine, I wouldn't spend much on a mouse if you aren't going to play games though

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

A 650 would be enough.

I currently run an older more power hungry config with Z77, Core I5 overclocked to 4.3 ghz, 2 harddrives, 1 ssd, 1 dvd burner etc with a 550 Watts Cooler Master without any problems.

So even 550 might be enough, to be on the safe side for some upgrades, a second gfx card perhaps, 650 will be ok.

Definitely, the extra cores will help out a bunch when running multiple VMs.

As long as you're not doing GPU passthrough or similar, VT-D on ryzen will work fine.

idk

3-5 will be turned on most of the time and some will run Windows and Some Linux as OS. I will be doing different type of works on these VMs depending on different things.

Do you plan on overclocking it? If not then 1700x is worth it if its not more than 30 dollars more (I forgot how much) but if you will overclock it then it might not be worth it

Then you really shouldn't get the 7700k, get a 1700

However, if it's just a hobby R7 will be good, but if you can go for 6800k or 6900k - they're bloody expensive but Intel has the superiority in virtualisation. Or wait for the new versions of these processors to come soon.

idk

I am not really thinking about overclocking any of the processors. But what If I think about gaming in near future :D:P

the 1700x is just a 1700 with a higher clock speed, if you are comfortable with overclocking you can spare a few bucks with the 1700 and get the same performance.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

7700k is 4 cores 8 threads

6800k is 6 cores 12 threads but slightly slower and older

6900k is 8 cores 16 threads and ^

yes, but it's really, really expensive for what it is and the architecture is apparently being replaced soon, so hold on.

Brand PCs might be nice to look at on the spec sheet, but you really never know what they actually put in for a Mainboard, PSU, GFX Card etc. So usually you have a hard time upgrading them, even swapping parts. And usually they are more expensive for the same workload than a self build.

Main System:

Anghammarad : Asrock Taichi x570, AMD Ryzen 7 5800X @4900 MHz. 32 GB DDR4 3600, some NVME SSDs, Gainward Phoenix RTX 3070TI

For me, i7-7700K costs the same as AMD Ryzen 1700 ... don't know why it's like this ... based on price, what should I get then?
