Since yesterday a few things have been happening:

-My pc randomly shuts down after a few hours of use

-I can't get it to boot back up until I restart my psu, despite my motherboard indicator being on

-Wierd plasticky smell?

I have checked any windows settings I know that would affect this, and the new smell would suggest a hardware issue. Any help is appreciated. It's a cx750m.

You should check the PSU and not only it. Also check the cables and each connection to the motherboard.

Also check the temps and maybe you could find a 'last temp' before the system dies. It might be a temp related issue.

Hopefully the PSU is good.

Check if you see any Kernel error in Windows Event viewer

observe what the psu does and check where the smell is coming from. And could be dead as u have a power hungry system with a shit psu

No kernel errors, but it says there were unexpected shutdowns.

I'll check the cables after the next shutdown. I have corsair link logging temps.

Just felt the back bent of the psu and it was h o t. I then removed the psu filter on my case to find that it was completely matted with dust and some of it was singed... I'll see if cleaning it changes anything.

What PSU do you have? You mentioned Corsair Link so I assume an HXi or RMi? Both those are good PSUs so if they're getting hot then make sure they have air going through them.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

He already specified what kind of PSU does he have.

I guess that was some kind of protection shut down. Because the dust filter was completely filled with dust, the PSU was reaching some high temps, even 100 deg C and due to that Corsair link it was shutting down itself in order to protect the circuits and in this way it was getting cool.

Ah, CX750M

Yeah not sure if the PSU is struggling or what. That unit will restart itself when it gets hot enough.

It ran fine after the cleaning but the smell persisted. I took a look at the caps to find that one of them was almost completely blown apart. Any tips on rmas? :P
