You could go far more then just 3.0 Ghz but first and foremost it depends on what motherboard you have, so please tell us the name/model of the mobo (although it wouldn't hurt to know your whole config including your on stock cooling, plus the PSU and RAM because those might need to be taken into account as well).

He probably wants to know how to overclock it and if he can overclock it.

I am going to be getting a 450 watt Bronze PSU with 8gb of ram but I can't have 4 because memory controller is weird I guess but I also have a MSI GTX 770 Twin Frozr and mobo is RS880PM-AM got with an prebuilt acer that I'm using

Well that was an obscure mobo to find info on... From what i looked at it seems to be a 3+1 power phase design motherboard, with no VRM cooling, so yeah, 3-3.2Ghz tops is the most you could get away within safety margins, if you could mod in some passive and active cooling might be able to get more out of it, but i dunno if its worth it for such a build since it might mean going with a custom cooler vs a stock one. i suggest RAM that support both 1066 Mhz and 1333Mhz speeds, since you will have to do Bus overclocking, the CPU being locked (and your ram might not be able to go higher then 1333Mhz which can be bipassed by setting them to 1066Mhz). With Bus/HTT overclocking your not only raising the CPU base frequency but the ram one as well.

Please expand on the ram issues though because i didn't quite understand what you can't have 4 of ? 4 Sticks or 4Gb

2x2 or 1x4 gb of ram DDR3 1333mhz haven't tried to down clock the ram

So what you meant was that using 2 sticks of 2 gb of ram works fine, and using one stick of 4 gb of ram works fine. But using 2 sticks of 4 gb of ram doesn't work right ?

No it's doesn't work

IS this what you meant ?

Yes sorry I forgot to mention that

But using 1 stick of 2 Gb of ram worked right ? If so try both sticks, not at the same time, try with one and then try with the other, if all is fine then using 1 stick try all of the slots and see if it works in all of the slots, you could also try using them in a none dual channel configuration. Regardless of how wonky the IMC is it should work as 4Gb....

I'll check that when I'm home

I didn't get to test the second stick but I get 6 beeps with an AMI bios for the first stick

Please do all 4, RAM issues are weird like that, it could just be that it didn't like that particular slot.

Sorry if that came out wrong, no problem we'll continue when you can :P , just initially thought that you gave up at the first slot, ram ca be quite mischevious at times and even picky about its slots.

Ok hopefully I don't need to spend $200+ because I'm trying to build it under $300

In that case either:

a.something is wrong with the sticks

b.something is wrong with the mobo ram slots, for instance make sure they are clean and that there's no dust.

c.something is wrong with the cpu imc

d.there's an incompatibility

You will need to test for each of this scenarios.

Test new sticks (one was DOA) still same thing, there is no dust, nothing is visually wrong (have to ask a friend to use his PC to see if they are dead), then that leaves the CPU IMC to be dead is the ram is the problem but i did get an error code for the new sticks same thing
