How does nas capacity vary with raid size. On synology site for specs of any nas it is written that size vary with raid type and different type of raids are hiven- raid 0, raid 1 basic, jbod and synology hybrid raid. How do they effect the storage and speed?

for your average nas the biggest difference is the storage and redundancy, the synology website does a pretty good job telling you exactly howmuch storage is used for redundancy and how much is use able.

In terms of speed you will not notice any difference as long as you are not using a 10 gigabit connection to the NAS, the network will always be the bottleneck for you.

Can I use 1 raid type for some hard disks and another raid type for some other? For example storing things for backup can be done in shr and things which I require on regular basis on raid 0 or 1. Also of I use Same storage in all bays will raid 1 still waste some of my storage?

if you have enough drive bays you could in theory create multiple volumes with different raid configurations.

But i would not do that, you should rather take all your drives into one volume and just use the raid that has everything you want from it.

You will always loose some usable storage when you use a raid because thats the whole idea behind it, you use some storage to keep data redundant and in case one of the drives breaks down you dont loose any data.

also note that a NAS does not replace back ups, it is a good solution to have accessible data that also offers redundancy but you should still back up your NAS to another drive from time to time.

Or at the very least the data that is very important to you.

I can backup to cloud

if your upload is fast enough that is certainly a good solution, i am doing this on my Synology NAS with all my pictures.

Since amazon prime includes unlimited picture storage i have set it up to upload all new picture that i drop into my pictures folder every day.
