Factory calibration, is it marketing or does it actually help?

I remember see that my PG279Q is factory calibrated according to the tech specs or something. Does factory calibration actually help colour accuracy out of the box or is it just marketing and I should by Calman and a meter if I want to get my monitor anywhere near close to accurate?

I've had mixed experiences with the "factory calibrated" monitors.
