Hi!

I'll start University next September. I need a new laptop to be able to work from anywhere. I'm seeking your opinion on some laptop that I've look. Pretty sure I'll be able to get a clear answer here. At least, clearer than Best Buy.

I'm moving from Montreal to Calgary to study, so my laptop will be my best friend for the first weeks. In architecture, I'll do alot of render (Vray, Maya, Rhino, Revit, Autocad, etc) so the GPU is quite important for me. Also, I'm may try to game a little bit. As I'm not a gammer right now, I don't want to base my choice over game, because it's manly for work. I want to invest a bit more to have a laptop that will be a little bit more "future proof"

My budget is around 2000$CAD.

1. HP Omen 17-W151NR  2150$

This laptop seem to be my first choice by now, but I have some question. Is it worth it 4k screen?

The GTX 1070 is a big + for the price. CPU is great, I think. The 17' screen is a very welcome for Architecture software.

512gb of SSD is enough for me. But HP?

2. MSI-GT72VR  2175$

MSI is a company that I trust. But for the same price: A bit better processor. 1060 vs 1070. 256 SSD + 1TB (Don't really need 1TB with all the ExHD that I have) i think it's G-Sync but not 4k? Better quality build?

3. Asus Rog gl753vd 1250$

For 1000$ less, which could also help me with school.

Same CPU than the MSI, strange? GTX 1050, is it powerful enough? No SSD, :/

What do you think about those laptop? Any other suggestion?

Thanks!

I say go for the Asus. A 1050 is more than enough to run all those programs, although if you can find a configuration that features an SSD, I would say go for that. most you really need for an SSD is about 500 GB. But if you need more storage than that stick with mechanical.

Thanks for your input!

I've continue to search online, and the thing that I don't get is the 4k value. Many said that 4k is just amazing, but as many said that the compatibility is not awesome and that many program are way to small.

Someone is using a 4k laptop? For my knowledge

Hi there. How about NONE of them. Canada sucks for buying eletronics so expensive. Now the reason why the Omen is so cheap is because it's absolute garbage. Overheats to shit, bad firmware, 0 qc. MSI is way too expensive for a 1060.

http://www.eurocom.com/ec/configure(2,384,0)TornadoF5 something like this is excellent but its 15in. Comes with a full desktop LGA socket and is a sick laptop with future upgradability.

And for 17in, I'd much rather you get an Alienware 17 R4. It's built way better than the competition at a lower pricepoint. Thing is MSRP sucks so you'll have to wait for deals or negotiate the shit out of sales. (also don't be limited by just those two options, Dell offers 10% off 1st thing after newsletter subscription, ebates offer money back if you buy dell with a referral link from them, add them up and the savings are huge. eg. i got a 6820HK + 1070 for 2k CAD eg 1.35k USD about 6 months ago).

I'm using one daily on my workstation. When it works. Great. 100% 10/10. When it doesn't work, I pull out my second laptop and note down that program for IT to code something quickly to fix it. Alot of programs ESPECIALLY legacy corporate software do not work with 4k AT ALL. So when it doesn't work it's a massive PITA. You don't need a 4k screen for a laptop.

A big thanks for your answers!

I gave a quick look for Alienware 17 R4, they are pretty good for the price too. I didn't found the 10% off with the newsletter. Only found a 5% cashback, which is bad for me because I won't be buying back from them anytime soon.

Also, looking for used laptop in my local maket, and found pretty good stuff, I think. Is it a bad idea to go used. What should I look if I'm going for a used laptop when buying them. Let me know your opinion on those.

Alienware 15.6 2016 - 1200$

I think this is the best laptop for money at the moment that I found. GTX970M, which is way lower than what I looked for previously, but probably good enough? No taxes, a big difference on price!

ASUS ROG STRIX GL502 - 1500$

For 300$ more, I get a GTX1060 and a 128gb SSD. But with a drawback in build quality as I understand?

Alienware 18 Gaming Laptop i7 Extreme Dual Geforce 880m GTX SSD - 1700$

Too good to be true? I looked at some review online. It seem to be a pretty good laptop, but I'm worried that it will be too big. 1700$ is under my budget and seem to be an awesome laptop. Overkill? Too big? Known issue?

Thank you for your time. It's a big purchase for me and your help mean alot!
