static/fuzz in know good speakers

just built a new comp and when plugging into the audio port (green) in the motherboard i get static/fuzz with some audio but when i plug into the front panel headphone jack its fine, any idea's why?? i have a z270h rog strix 

one little note which might not matter but the mother board mounting screws didnt line up with just three holes for the case (evovle atx glass) and im not sure if theres grounds build into the mother board that require a screw in it but if thats true then maybe thats the problem?

Try using passthrough audio.

If there is no screw in them, pull them out... it is VERY bad to leave them just sitting exposed to the PCB like that...

HDMI audio through monitor. See if your monitor has a "audio out" jack. This jack does not use your onboard audio on your motherboard, instead it uses the audio chip on your graphics card. NVIDIA HD Audio or AMD High Definition Audio. These generally have better audio quality. Just see if that one has the fuss, because if it doesn't then I think you mounted your IO shield wrong or something.

welp basically there nine mounts i got           x         x          o          the ones with the x but the mount on the end are just hovering over nothing

pull them out. Very bad. Paul explains in this video as he had this problem on his latest build.

Do they really?  Most onboard is actually pretty descent these days, and I wouldn't expect to hear an improvement without going to some quality external equipment

aye that worked, no fuzz when plugged in the passthrough on my monitor  soooooo whats the deal then?

Eh, they are pretty decent. But I read online somewhere (can't remember where) that someone tested it with some equitment and stuffs and they found AMD audio was better then the onboard on the sabertooth Z77. Can't remember where though.

Furthermore, I'm not aware of any way you can pass an analog audio signal along an HDMI cable in the first place... I would assume when you plug your monitor in to the card with HDMI alone, and then headphones/speakers into the monitor, it's using a DAC in the monitor, not the graphics card, to actually generate the sound

Well that's an important distinction to make since I would expect the DAC in the monitor to be nothing special.

That is correct. You're simply pushing the decoding to an external device, just like using a dedicated DAC. The GPU may have some processing functionality e.g. it has a 'game' mode, but it should just be a digital transfer from disk to monitor.

 

It can help, as it did in this case, when there are grounding issues or poor circuitry/components as a dedicated DAC would help, and should be thought of as such.

 

I would be very surprised if the DAC in a monitor is much different from on-board.
